ABC Ch. 6 Question 2 by Matt Bailey

While the author based Chin-Kee’s physical appearance on stereotypes about Asian Americans from the 19th century, he based Chin-Kee’s actions on stereotypes from the 20th and 21st centuries. Which of Chin-Kee’s actions in Chapter 6 seem to reflect modern-day stereotypes about Asian Americans?

I think that one of the main modern day stereotypes that Yang used with Chin-Kee was that all Asians are smart. Like when ever Danny and Chin-Kee where in class, Chin-Kee would always answer the question and he never got any of them wrong. So by just doing that it is implying that Chin-Kee is smart because he knows the answer to all of the questions being ask to the class.

In chapter 6 it does show a lot of Asian-American Stereotypes from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries but one action that showed a lot of the modern-day, It was when Chin-Kee was going to all of Danny's classes and he was answering all of the questions the teachers would ask. I feel like this is a good representation of modern-day stereotypes because they are seen as super nerdy or as geeks so him knowing all of the answers made him stick out a little bit differently than just looking Asian-American.

well first of this is also a stereotype but something you see in chapter 6 is that Chin kee is smarter than all the other american kids and this reflects modern day Asian Americans that maybe there smarter in a way and that many people think that even though its not always true.

When Danny and Chin-kee were in class, Chin-kee was the one that was quick to all the answers just for his first day in school.

Theirs always the joke "me Chinese me play joke me go pee pee in his coke" and as we see in chapter six he actually does that theirs also the stereotype of all Asians have squinted eyes and cant see very well. And we tend to joke about them eating weird foods Like cats and dogs so Chin Kee really represents all these stereotypes. the way he dresses and the way he talks plus he is super smart and knows all the answers to everything.

In chapter 6 the main focus of the author I think was literally basing every thing that Chin-Kee does off of racist stereotypes throughout the ages. Specifically the fact that all Asians are super smart. He shows this by having Chin-Kee answer every question and have his answers always be correct. Danny didn't want to have Chin-Kee answer at first, I think because he didn't want him to draw any more attention to himself. Danny is ultimately embarrassed by Chin-Kee and would much prefer him to stay quiet, rather than being loud and obnoxious.
