One of the main ideas of this chapter was the railroad. The railroad was a huge part of the industrial revolution. It was used to transport crops to different parts of the country which made our country interdependent. Another important thing the railroad did was create jobs. With the increase of the uses of railroads people needed a way to keep track of time. To fix that problem the government created time zones.

Henry Bessemer created the Bessemer process. The Bessemer process was a cheaper way to make iron into steel. Since steel could be created in an easier and more efficient way, it began to be used for more things. It was used to build bridges and skyscrapers.

Christopher Sholes was the inventor of the type writer. The type writer was used in many different jobs and was very useful during the revolution. The type writer also opened up new jobs. Some of the jobs that were created were for women. This gave women an opportunity to get out of the house and work.

New Vocab word: Monopoly

A new vocab word that I learned because of this chapter was monopoly. The definition of monopoly is: The exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service.
During the industrial revolution many companies became monopolies. Monopolies later became illegal.

The most interesting part of this chapter was learning about the factories. I thought this was the most interesting because I learned new things about how the big businesses owners treated their workers. I thought it was interesting to learn how the employees started to form unions to fight for their rights.

Connection to the past:

Since the industrial revolution there have been many improvements to the work place. One connection to the past is that we still have the unions that were created during that time. Many of the work changes are still in place today. Like the creation of minimum wage and health insurance. There are still unions so workers can make contracts that are fair and employers can hold workers accountable.

Another main idea was the rise in the number of factories. Factories became a huge part of the industrial revolution. Due to the invention of the the light bulb, factories could now be open 24/7 with different shifts. With different shifts new jobs were created. The down side to working in the factories was it was very dangerous and people had to work long hours.
