By 1775 more than a half-million African Americans, most of them enslaved, were living in the 13 colonies . 

The women that had the most direct roles were secret soldiers and spies.These were the ''Daughters of Liberty''. 

Some Native American groups sided with the British in hopes that a British victory would stem the flood of Western expansion.
