In Top down listening; The listener uses his background knowledge of the topic and contextualizes words to aid comprehension. For example; while trying to talk someone in a crowded place as we can't hear all the conversation,we can guess the parts we don't understand by using our background knowledge.

bottom-up listening uses sounds, words ,other small units to create the meaning. Words are more important rather than meaning.

A successfull listening depends on combining of these 2 processes.

Listening is a challenging skills as it requires an external outcome. Despite the changes or advances in technology, Listening has kept on being a crucial skill. Listening is more difficult or complex to assess since it has variations related to the different factors such as spoken input text, which can be vocalised in different ways even when the written text is the same. While assessing listening, the teacher has to take multiple points to take into consideration such as length, speed or if it is a discussion or an interview. There should be balance in terms of level and difficulty between the task and text.
