In my opinion, the simultaneous rise of sectionalism and nationalism in the 1800s confused American citizens and states and led to the Civil War. After the United States became independent of Great Britain, nationalism worked to make America function as a one country. However, sectionalism began to grow in the country due to the differences lifestyle and population ratio by race between northern states and southern states. The United States faced various problems as these two opposite ideas grew in the United States at the same time. The Civil War was triggered as a result of the growing movement of individuals to protect their own interests.
