Malala has shown throughout her life that she is a truly radical agent of change. She sacrificed her own wellbeing to stand up for the right for girls to go to school. Even after she was shot, she didn't shy away from what she believed in. Continuing to speak out about girls education, her father and her set up the Malala Fund, a charity dedicated to helping girls in third world countries receive education.(2) One of Malala's biggest achievements was receiving the Nobel Piece prize in October of 2014 for her work as an education activist. She was 17 at the time, making her the youngest recipient of the award (3). Malala has challenged every aspect of women rights, and has stood strong in the face of adversity.

How Is Malala Truly Radical?

Malala ‘s work on girls’ education has inspired many women to stand up for education in their own country. After returning to Pakistan months after she was shot, Malala was greeted by 40 women rights activists. “They were telling Malala, ‘you are such a huge inspiration to all of us. Your very presence in Islamabad is a huge thing for all of us, and you have raised up our morale sky high because you are here in Pakistan’.” (Yousafzai 2018) (4) While the Taliban may still have control over much of Pakistan, Malala ‘s work has opened the rest of the worlds eyes, people are wanting to help, and this is how change begins in these third world countries.

From a young age, Malala grew up in a family that challenged the normal. Her father, one of her biggest inspirations (1), was a man who wanted to see change in Pakistan, especially for women. Malala went to school for many years before the Taliban took control, already challenging the role women have over there. Once the Taliban had forbidden girls from going to school, Malala started peacefully protesting for her and other girls’ rights for education. She wen to different schools around her town with other young women and spoke with knowledge beyond her years. She also started writing to the BBC under a fake name about what was happening to her village. (4) Unfortunately, Malala’s bravery cost her a bullet in the side of her head, lucky she recovered and this has helped spread her message of girls education across the world, making Malala a truly radical agent of change.

How Did Malala's Worldview Inspire Change?

Malala grew up in Mingora Pakistan, where over 95% of the country’s population is Muslim. (5) In the Islamic religion, education is believed to be available to every able citizen, regardless of gender or age. (6) Thus, before the Taliban took control of Malala’s village, young girls had every right to go to school and learn up until around secondary school, where many families would marry their daughter off young. Malala’s had a very similar worldview to that of her culture, but strongly disagreed with how the Taliban treated women. Malala has stated in interviews before that the Taliban should not be considered Muslims following the Islam religion. They may say that they are, but their actions go completely against what the Islamic Bible, (The Quran) Says about both education and human rights.

The Taliban believe that the new generations of Muslim do not follow the Quran how it is mean to be, which couldn’t be more wrong. The Taliban hated that young girls were standing up to their oppression and worldview, so Malala became the main target to silence. Although after shooting her, they didn’t silence her, but instead gave her a louder voice. Malala’s worldview is one that almost every girl that is not able to be educated wants. Unfortunately, the actions of the Taliban have stained the Muslim religion for many foreigners, but with Malala’s worldview of education for all girls being something that is a part of Islamic religion, I believe that all our world-views about Islam are changing too.

How Malala Has Inspired Me

When I first saw Malala and read about her story, I was absolutely blow away by her bravery. I think every kid that has never had to worry about food or having a roof over their head takes a lot for granted and for me, after hearing her story, she made me realise how much I take for granted in my life. I found it so inspiring that despite facing death and coming out the other side, all the fear she had left. (7) I know that if I had been shot in the head, I would be terrified of even stepping outside, let alone returning to the bus she was shot at but nevertheless, she returned there early last year with her family. I think she is also what inspired me to go for middle school captain last year. Even though being middle school captain isn’t the same as speaking at the United Nations meeting, I still felt awestruck by her leadership skills and wanted to improve mine too.

Malala has most notably changed my worldview on education. It sounds stereotypical and it’s kind of is, but there were, and still are, days when I hated going to school. Now I'm really trying to not take what I have for granted, Malala has shown me that so many people have to fight for basic rights. I'm fortunate enough not to have fight, so I shouldn’t be complaining about what others are dying for.

While what Malala has done for women’s education is amazing, I do believe there could’ve been a safer way to go about it. Before Malala was shot, her family, (Specifically her father) Was also threated to be killed by the Taliban. (4) I feel the whole situation could have been avoided if Malala remained somewhat anonymous while protesting. While putting her wellbeing on the line added to why Malala is truly radical, she was only 15 at the time of being shot. It would have been safer if her identity remained anonymous while building up an audience of people who wanted change for women.
