Another thing mentioned, that I completely agreed with, is the harsh reality of assessments. In schools a lot of the students abilities are narrowed down to a pen and paper, to take a major test. 
In the readings, they mentioned one teachers split their students by "fast learners" and "the ones who had no idea what they were doing" in another table. This teacher was separating her students, as opposed to have them help each other; this is a huge problem because it was viewed as racist and wrong. They gave another similar example, of when they did it to the first-year teachers, in which case they did not like it. The man point of this is to show just how important it is to recognize the hard work of people, whether they are new at it or not. 
Back to the testing aspect of this, schools give such standardized test to keep records of the growth of these students; see where they started and where they eventually ended. However, these tests are highly looked down upon, because they are inadequate since they do not focus their attention on what is important indicators of a child's growth, both in reading and writing. There is however, different ways to watch these student's growth in reading and writing, which is actually a good way to evaluate it because it shows the truth growth. 
The main purpose of evaluation needs to be about learning, however, most often it is not. Most teachers take evaluation as a way to show that their teaching method works, but that is not the way things need to be viewed. The main purpose of evaluation is not to guide teaching practice, but rather validate them, and allow others to see that they worked, yet focus on the learning aspect of it. 
The main purpose this week's reading was trying to teach us, is just how to help our students grow as readers and writers. Surely, we need to take the evaluation aspect of things seriously, but we also need to make sure it is being taken as a learning experience, rather than just evaluating the way we teach.
