1. What are the major influences on first impressions and explain why first impressions often become lasting ones.

- Some major influences on first impressions are determined by the culture you were raised in. In East Asian cultures, like in China and Japan, the people tend to share less personal information when meeting someone and starting new relationships than someone in the West (Nevid, 2012, pg 489). A more positive first impression tends to be formed when people are willing to talk about more personal information but too much sharing can lead to a negative first impression when starting a new relationship. Not only does the amount of personal information told help determine a first impression but also stereotypes. Your own stereotypes tend to determine your first impression on someone. Stereotypes tend to be more positive if the person is of the same race as you rather than a negative stereotype of someone of the opposite race. How you stereotype people based on their characteristics influence your first impression on them. (Nevid, 2012, pg 489)

2. Identify factors that influence attraction and *why* you think these factors create the influence they do.

- According to the video attractiveness is determined by a mathematical formula in the brain that comes to its result faster than we think. There are parts of the brain that attribute to our perception of attraction, like the fusiform gyrus and the amygdala. The fusiform gyrus is responsible for quickly identifying a few features, categorizing them as a face, then directing that information to other parts of the brain for further processing (National Geographic, 2015).
- One factor is the golden ratio, this is the proportion set that naturally occurs in everything (nature, architecture, and human faces). The golden ratio says that a face that's 1.5 times longer than it is wide is more attractive to people because it is average/normal.
- Some scientists believe that average characteristics tend to be more preferred because it indicates a healthy partner. A healthy partner means it is more likely that the offspring you produce will be healthy.
- Also, facial symmetry leads to more attraction. If you have facial symmetry it signals that you are able to withstand insults in the environment, meaning you have good genes.

- First impressions become lasting impressions because of social schema. A social schema is a mental representation we form of people in our social environment (Nevid, 2012, pg 489). If we have a positive first impression of someone then when they show negative characteristics we tend to make excuses for those actions. But, if we have a negative first impression of someone and they show some positive characteristics we are more likely to ignore the positive actions they show. We process new impressions of people through the old impressions we got from them, this leads to first impressions being lasting impressions.

- I think these factors create the influence they do because its natural to want a healthy partner. A healthy partner means healthy children and that they are more likely to be alive longer than an unhealthy partner. The golden ratio attributes to facial symmetry which signals our brain to think that person is healthy, the healthiness of them leads us to be more attractive to them. Average characteristics seem to lead to more attraction and I feel that is because no one really wants someone that is less than average because then they are less attractive and according to scientists it indicates a "unhealthy" partner. Also, us humans just want to fit into our social groups and be "cool" so choosing someone that is average and attractive helps us to "fit in". I have noticed around my school that boys tend to only choose the girls that are physically more attractive to impress their guy friends instead of choosing someone that they find attractive to them and that has more things in common with them.
