early civilization starts at around 4000 and 3000 BCE, according to nationalgeographic.org, when agriculture and trading allows people to have surplus food and economic stability was on its rise. civilization first appeared in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) and later on in Egypt.

the name Mesopotamia itself comes from the ancient greek word for "the land between the rivers", which is a reference to Tigris and Euphrates rivers (twin sources of water for a region that's mostly owned within the borders of Iraq in the present, but also including Syria, Turkey, and Iran). the regular flooding happening along the Tigris and the Euphrates made the land around them fertile and ideal for growing crops for food—which made it a prime spot for the Neolithic/Agricultural Revolution, that began almost 12.000 years ago—and with people cultivating plants and domesticating animals, they are able to stay in a certain place and form permanent villages.

as time goes on, those small villages evolved into early cities, where the characteristics of civilization (large population centers, monumental architectures, communication, division of labor, division of social classes) developed as well. but the evolving process in Mesopotamia also takes additional factors, such as changes in climate and natural environment, which requires the people to be more organized in terms of coping.

so somehow to conclude it all, people found a place where it's ideal to live (financially and geographically), which then allows them to grow with more people coming to that certain place in order to live. as they became more familiar with the area (building homes, cultivating plants), it evolved into cities (how, in my opinion with the materials used in that time evolves as well, people inventing more advanced materials) in which the characteristics of civilization dives their way in and developed with the cities as time goes on too.

https://www.nationalgeographic.org/article/key-components-civilization/
https://www.history.com/news/how-mesopotamia-became-the-cradle-of-civilization#:~:text=The%20presence%20of%20those%20rivers,for%20growing%20crops%20for%20food.
