Bees are a nuisance to most, but what a lot of people don't know is how important they are for our ecosystem. The bee supports the growth of plants, by cross-pollinating and in turn supporting our fresh fruit and vegetable crops. They also help support the growth of flowers, nuts, and seeds which is a source of nourishment for wildlife. Bees are dying at a rapid rate due to our global climate change, and the chemicals we often use on our lawns, gardens and crops. As a community we can plant bee-friendly gardens, build habitats educate the community, and go chemical-free to try and save the bees!

My idea on how we can make this happen on a community level, is to build community gardens with bee-friendly plants, and bee sanctuaries where they can huddle during the colder months. This will allow for easy cross-pollination, and for bees to live longer and to be able to reproduce.
We can hold free community events to educate people on the importance of bees, and to encourage the community to use organic, and chemical-free pesticides. We can also use this opportunity to promote our local bee-keepers and farmers to better support the bee community.

This idea of "saving the bees" is not a new concept. Local stores are selling "honey bee pops" that you plant in your garden, turn into wildflowers and attract bees. I've seen honey bee habitats that you can hang on your patio or your fence. On a wholesale level, companies are already trying to encourage the everyday family to support bee life in their own backyard.

And who doesn't love honey, berries, cotton, or tequila? The production of things we eat and use all the time is so heavily supported by bees and their pollination. If we educate our community and help support our local bee-keepers, we can help sustain a healthy bee population and therefore sustain our crops!
