The reaping is a major conflict to Katniss Everdeen because, in the text it says on page 20, chapter 1 "Effie Trinket crosses back to the podium, smoothes the slip of paper, and reads out the name in a clear voice. And it's not me. It's Primrose Everdeen." This will later cause Katniss to volunteer for her sister, Primrose, to take her place in the Hunger Games. I put the song The Archer, to my playlist because the lyrics remind me of the character Katniss Everdeen from the novel. It reminds me because in the song it says, "I've been the archer, I've been the pray. Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?". These lyrics remind me when the novel stated in chapter 4, page 53, "And some small gnarled place inside of me hated for her weakness, for her neglect, for the months she had put us through. Prim forgave her, but I had taken a step back from needing my mother, put a wall to protect myself from needing her, and nothing was ever going to be the same between us again." The reason why I connected those lines to the song lyrics is because I believe Katniss is looking for someone who will look after her, because she feels lost from when she had to step up to take her mother's role. I think in Katniss's prospective she is mocking over the line, "Who could ever leave me darling?" because she believes everyone will end up leaving her. I also relate the two pieces together because before the games Katniss was the archer because she was hunting to provide for her family. For the lyric, "I've been the pray", I think that refers to when Katniss was actually in the hunger games being hunted by the other tributes.

One of the topics the author mentions in the novel is determination. The message the author was trying to express is, the cruel acts increased her determination to survive so she could see her family again. I know this because in the novel during chapter 3 it says, "Really, really try. I swear it,' I say. And I know, because of Prim, I'll have to."  This shows the message of determination, because Katniss knows she won't only fight for herself during the games, but for her family too.

My favorite part of the novel was when the gamemakers created a new rule in the games that allowed both tributes from the same district to win, because I thought it was such a great plot twist and it showed how much Katniss really cared for Peeta. However, my least favorite part of the novel is when Katniss makes herself seem very cold-hearted, because I believe it describes her to be very unsympathetic, yet she still worries about people’s thoughts about her. On a lighter note, a character I believe deserves all the admiration from fans is Rue. Rue was a secretive, clever, quiet character that teamed up with Katniss to destroy the career tribute's food. She was wise in helping Katniss fight, but even more intelligent in providing advice to her. On the other hand, a character I disliked was Katniss. I enjoyed her story, but I disliked the way she changed her personality so fast to become very cold-hearted. I think if she embraced her emotions it would show a better character development, but instead she turned off her emotions in a blink of an eye. It made her seem as if she didn’t care at all, but we as the reader know she is constantly conflicted with her emotions. If I could change one thing, it would be the way the author described Peeta’s abuse because personally I think it was more important to the character, but it seemed the author only added it to support Katniss in the plot. One technique the author used that I really liked was the flashbacks added when Katniss would tell a story or think to herself, because I felt it was exciting to the reader to learn things about Katniss’s origin. One example of this is during chapter 2, page 28. On page 28 it talks about her connection with Peeta, but it also showed the origin of Katniss hunting to provide for her family. At the start of the novel Katniss is private, and independent. This is shown because the book mentions, “As soon as I’m in the trees, I retrieve a bow and sheath of arrows from a hollow log.” This allows the reader to inference Katniss is going to hunt. It’s later stated that hunting is highly illegal. This shows Katniss is independent enough to hunt for herself, and be private enough to keep her illegal activities quiet from authorities. During the events that unfold, Katniss changes into a more trusting, resourceful character. This could be seen in chapter, 15, when it states “You know they aren’t the only ones who can form alliances,” This is a turning point for Katniss’s character, because it shows Katniss putting herself out there to form an alliance with Rue, and because of that Katniss shares her skills with Rue. This makes Katniss more trustworthy. At the end of the novel Katniss is conflicted. This trait is shown when the novel states, “I want to tell him that he’s not being fair. That we were strangers. That I did what it took to stay alive, to keep us both alive in the arena. That I can’t explain how things are with Gale because I don't know myself. That it’s no good loving me because I’m never going to get married anyway and he’d just end up hating me later than sooner. That if I do have feelings for him, it doesn’t matter because I’ll never be able to afford the kind of love that leads to a family, to children. And how can he? How can he after what we’ve just been through?” This shows that Katniss is conflicted by her emotions of winning the games, her relationship with both Peeta and Gale, and logic itself. I put the song 'You Belong With Me' on my playlist because the lyrics reminded me of Peeta’s perspective of the love triangle in the Hunger Games. It reminded me, because in the song it says, “Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find what you’re looking for has been here the whole time” in the pre-chorus and “You belong with me, you belong with me” in the Chorus. These lyrics reminded me when the novel stated in chapter 9, page 125, “Because… because… she came here with me.” I’m also reminded when Katniss and Peeta get very close during the actual Hunger Games shown on page 244, when Peeta says “How about that kiss?”. For Peeta it was never a lie being in love with Katniss. I connect the pre-chorus line to the first quote, because I believe during the entire time of the Hunger Games, Peeta and Katniss were always together. Although they weren’t always physically together, they were always thinking about each other. I believe that Peeta always kept Katniss in mind not only for his love for her, but because he has a feeling of longing to be by her ever since that first day he saw her. I think the same thing goes for the second line of lyrics and the second quote. I think Peeta believed even more in his love for Katniss during and after the Hunger Games, but more importantly I think Peeta believes in the possibility of having a shared feeling with Katniss for one another. Of course, the second quote is taken out of its comedic context, but I believe in context or not the quote still shows Peeta’s desire for Katniss. I put the song 'Don’t Blame Me’ on my playlist, because when I listened to this song I was reminded by the lie Haymicth tells Katniss to say during the interview about why she almost ate the berries with Peeta. On page 341, Haymitch told Katniss, “Your only defense can be you were so madly in love you weren’t responsible for your actions.” I connected this quote with the lyric “Don’t blame me love made me crazy, if it doesn’t you ain’t doin’ it right” said in the chorus of the song. I believe the lyrics can be interpreted from Katniss’s perspective when asked about almost eating the poisonous berries with Peeta.

Yes, they have to have a victor. The message the author was trying to express is pretending to be one thing for the sake of attention. I know this because in the novel it states in chapter 10, page 129, “Who cares? It’s all a big show. It’s all how you’re perceived. The most I could say about you after your interview was that you were nice enough, although that in itself was a small miracle. Now I can say you’re a heartbreaker. Oh, oh, oh, how the boys back home fall longingly at your feet. Which do you think will get more sponsors?”. This explains the message of appearance, because Katniss will act like Peeta’s love interest for the attention of sponsors, and the fans.

And so I became the butt of the joke.” I connected this first line to when Katniss says, “I volunteer!’ I gasp. “Volunteer a tribute!”, and when Effie says, “But more excitement to come! It’s time to choose our boy tribute!’ Clearly hoping to contain her head as she crosses to the ball that contains the boys’ names and grabs the fist slip she encounters. She zips back to the podium, and I don’t even have time to wish for Gale’s safety when she’s reading the name. ‘Peeta Mellark.” Both quotes are said during chapter 2. I find the lyric and the quote similar, because when your name gets drawn from the balls, it shows the unlucky ones. I connect the part of the verse, “And so I became the butt of the joke” to when during chapter 7 Katniss says, “ I turn to the Gamemakers. A few are nodding approval, but the majority of them are fixated on a roast pig that just arrived at their banquet table.” I believe these are similar because most of the Gamemarkers paid no attention to Katniss, making her seem insufficient just like a bad punch line of a joke. The next part of the verse is, “I wounded the good and I trusted the wicked.” It can be interpreted from Peeta’s perspective when it made an alliance with the Career pack. My evidence to support this is said during chapter 13, “Finally, I hear Peeta say harshly, ‘Oh, let her stay up there. It’s not like she’s going anywhere.”
