The Pit and The Pendulum illustrates the human instinct and strive for survival through the story of a man who was sentenced to death in the Spanish Inquisition. He recalls the experience of being strapped down, with very small proximity to a deep pit, as a pendulum slowly descended and swung back and forth, nearing his death. He describes the fear and anxiety he experienced, as well as the torment of knowing that death approaches, with no ability of survival. As he accepted his death, he was miraculously saved by French troops who took him out of his misery.

At the story's beginning, the narrator is on trial and receives a death sentence from the black-robed men. This depicts the cruelty of past societies in the order of judgment. Consequently, he is placed in a dungeon where he spends his time exploring, only to discover a deep pit he almost falls into. This creates a sense of mystery for both the narrator and the reader to realize that they don't know of the horrors that await in the dungeon. Then the narrator falls asleep and wakes up to find food and water, showing that someone was attending to him. After eating and drinking, he falls asleep again and wakes up strapped to a board with a huge sharp pendulum hanging over him. Now, the narrator can see the room clearly, and he realizes that the room is not what he expected. The pendulum appears to be swinging closer and closer to him with every sway, building tension in the story. After a while of being tortured, the author thinks cleverly and gets the rats to bite off his binds by rubbing food on them. This creates a sense of hope for the narrator's fate. This hope however is quickly diminished when the walls of the dungeon start to push him closer to the pit. But just as he is about to fall in, the walls retract, and he is caught by the French troops.

During the Spanish inquisition, an unnamed narrator is standing on trial and receiving a sentence of death, where he passes out after the issuing of his judgement. As he gains consciousness, he tries to explore the depth of his chamber, and almost slips into a chasm at one end of the chamber. In his square-shaped chamber with hideous faces surrounding him, he finds bread and water, while he is strapped to a board, leaving only his head and arm free. As he goes in and out of consciousness, he notices a swinging pendulum, symbolizing his impending doom. However, in trial to escape, he places his food on the tightly knit ropes, in order for the mice to set him free. Nevertheless, he remains in a state of fear, screaming in despair as the walls are tightening around him. Yet, as the sounds of thundering trumpets bless his ears, the walls retract, and he is saved by General Lasalle, the leader of the French troops.

"The Pit and The Pendulum" written by Edgar Allan Poe mainly focuses on the horrors of confinement and the relentless fight for survival against an inescapable and inevitable doom. The unnamed narrator faces a series of horrifying tortures designed to push him to the edge of sanity and death. The main theme of the story is the terror of the unknown, exacerbated by the fear of an inevitable death. Poe explores how extreme psychological and physical distress can drive a person to their limits, showing the torment inflicted on both the body and mind. Themes of hope and despair also play a central role, as the narrator alternates between moments of courage and hopelessness. The conflict is primarily man versus environment, with the narrator battling against the dark pit that represents a terrifying, unknown death and the pendulum, a swinging blade that slowly descends, threatening to slice him in half. There’s also an underlying man versus self conflict, as he struggles to maintain his sanity and will to survive amidst these horrors. Through moments of resourcefulness and sheer determination, the narrator fights to avoid a tragic fate, embodying the resilience of the human spirit even when facing the darkest fears.
