Because of the law enforcement and these higher taxes, the patriot colonists were very upset. One event, in particular, was when the officer, Ebenezer Richardson, tried to break up a crowd and shot his gun; he accidentally killed an eleven-year-old boy. Hugh White was the only officer guarding the king's money in the town. Colonists started harassing White, which caused him to strike a man with his bayonet. People were furious at this and started throwing things like snowballs, ice, and stones. Bells that indicated a fire at that time were ringing and, many male colonists went outside. Mean-while, White called Captain Thomas Preston for help. Preston thought that violence was enviable and set up defenses. The situation escalated quickly, prompting yelling and more violent weapons thrown at the British soldiers. One soldier in peculiar fired, whether or not it was because of misinterpreting a word he thought he had heard, fire or it being intentional is still unknown. After the shot many other soldiers joined him, killing a total of five people and wounding six. These deaths soon were used for political gain for the Anti-British Patriots to convince the British loyalists. He defended it and was there when the situation got so extreme the soldiers started firing on the colonists. While determining if he was guilty of telling his soldiers to fire, John Adams came to his defense saying that there was no evidence of Preston telling Richard Palmes (one who shot first) to fire. After the situation, Captain Preston said, “None of them was a hero. The victims were troublemakers who got more than they deserved. The soldiers were professionals…who shouldn’t have panicked. Media portrayed the British as savages because they had killed a little boy and five other people. The British lost support of many of the colonists and with the high taxes, aggression continued.
