Environmental protection is ingrained in Fairtrade. To sell Fairtrade products, farmers have to improve soil and water quality, manage pests, avoid using harmful chemicals, manage waste, reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and protect biodiversity. With the growing demand for Mascobado. A modernistic muscovado factory capable of pulping 30 tons of sugar cane per day with juice extraction at 70 percent was constructed.

In 1988, the Green Coop suggested the trading of bananas in light of the bounded demand for muscovado in Japan. As they transferred representatives to explore the types of bananas cultivating in Negros, they chose the naturally grown Balangon variety for its sweet-sour( koku) flavor, which was pleasing to the Japanese plate. The Japanese noticed the naturally grown Balangon as a negation to Philippine bananas commercially exported to Japan by international corporations( MNCs) that involved the usage of dangerous chemicals in an exploitative colony terrain. Alter Trade sought out highland communities in the area where Balangon bananas were naturally grown as a supplemental crop in the backyards of homes. At that moment, bananas of the Balangon variety had no salable worth. Alter Trade worked  out arrangements with different farmers willing to serve as partner suppliers.
