These words can be interpreted in many ways. I took them to mean that a woman was planning on having a baby but had a miscarriage. These six words represent Mattie, who is struggling to support her family after her mom dies.  She is not a son that can work on the farm and she thinks her father resents that.  She enjoys reading and writing and wants to go to college but is not sure if she should stay home and become a wife.  In the end, Mattie decides to do what is best for her and go to college.
