Why did I choose this goal?
In our course we learned that “Leadership means communicating with others in such a way that they are influenced and motivated to perform actions that further common goals and lead toward desired outcomes.” (Daft R. L., 2013, p. 262). Therefore, communication is a significant leadership skill. In my self-reflection, I have realized that my communication skills still have room for improvement. I sometimes find it difficult to express myself or my thoughts clearly, to communicate content comprehensibly and to speak in front of an audience.

Action Point 1!
Independent learning and acquisition of communication skills.
First of all, I would like to look more into this subject area on my own. There are some interesting readings on this topic, such as the textbook "Basics of communication for leaders" by the author Dr. Urs Alter.

In our course, we learned about six elements that facilitate strategic conversations, which help identify strategic issues and build productive relationships, which in turn helps the company succeed (Daft R. L., 2013, p. 284). In order to achieve my goal of independently acquiring certain knowledge about the topic of communication, it is important to inform myself accordingly and to internalize information such as mentioned example. For this purpose, I would like to use other sources of information besides suitable books, such as podcasts, articles, watching videos etc.

Action Point 2!
Putting theory into practice.
According to the motto: learning by doing! Coaching offers the opportunity to learn how to reach people through appropriate conversations and to master difficult situations through sensible communication techniques (Pitz S. B., NA). Practicing speaking in front of an audience would also be beneficial for me. I have always tried to avoid speaking in front of an audience. Especially at school or university, I have tried to avoid these situations and sent my fellow students or classmates ahead to present something. I really want to change that and motivate myself to be more self-confident in the future and see speaking in front of an audience more as a communication exercise and an opportunity.

I have asked myself this question many times. I think to improve my communication skills, it is important to first understand why I am afraid of speaking to an audience, for example. These kind of videos help me because they explain it, so I want to include it in my story.

Why did I choose this goal?
Diversity plays an important role in today's workplace. A good leader should understand the complexity of diversity issues, be able to develop an inclusive environment and support the professional development of minorities (Daft R. L., 2013, p. 328). I deliberately chose this point because I took part in an exercise in class to determine my cultural intelligence quotient (CQ). My result was in the middle range. I was disappointed and it made me think. I want to be a leader who does not accept discrimination and prejudice and understands and promotes diversity in a company. Therefore, I want to work specifically on this point.

Action Point 2!
Gaining work experience abroad.
I think a crucial factor is to engage with people who come from different cultures. In our course reading The Leadership experience, the author made me think about this with the following statement: "Working in a different country is one of the best ways people can stretch beyond their comfort zones and develop a broader, more global perspective." (Daft R. L., 2013, p. 345). This is exactly the goal I will pursue. As soon as I finish my studies, I will gain practical experience abroad. I want to meet people from other cultures, understand them and thereby broaden my horizons in terms of culture and diversity.

Action Point 1!
Gaining knowledge about emotional intelligence.
I think that especially in relation to diversity, an appreciative, sensitive, and empathic leadership style is particularly well suited. I would say empathy and emotional intelligence are among my strengths. My goal is to increase my awareness of emotional intelligence and to improve my skills. There are many books, videos, articles, and workshops on this topic on the internet. My goal is to engage with this content and reflect on it. What am I already doing well, what can I improve? I found the attached Ted Talk very interesting and it has broadened my understanding even more, so I would like to use it as an example of how I am acquiring knowledge & tips for my goal of enhancing my emotional intelligence and consequently my awareness of diversity.

By achieving the above goals, I would achieve new skills and develop existing ones. The course has changed my mind. I could now imagine becoming a leader in the future. Achieving the goals would help me to gain more self-confidence and they would change or improve my skills.
The two goals would also be beneficial for my future colleagues. I would be able to communicate messages clearly and interpret information correctly. Through good emotional intelligence and understanding of diversity, I'd be a supportive and above all fair leader for my colleagues and enable them to have a workplace where they feel comfortable and valued.
