To prevent them from being a distraction, have the students actively using their phones to answer questions or research things. For students who may not have a cellphone they can be provided with another tool to complete given tasks.

There are many apps out there that can be incorporated into the classroom. Maybe have a certain time in the day set aside for the cell phone use. In society now where technology is everywhere, I think it is inevitable that kids are going to be using cell phones, so we might as well find a productive way for the use of them.

For a group presentation last semester, my partner and I used Nearpod to present and had the class connect through their smartphones to take polls and interact with the slideshow. The problem is monitoring students' use of cell phones. Trying to keep them on task and away from games and social media could be difficult. Perhaps letting them know that if they get caught they have to do the assignment via pen and paper, or docking their grade would work.

I agree I think that technology is an amazing tool that we should utilize. We do need to be careful and do all we can to make sure that it isn't abused in any way. I know that will be really hard, so honestly I'm not sure that cell phones themselves would be a good idea. Maybe providing school technology, or having the students provide their own tablet, with restricted access when at school.

It all depends on age, attention span, and even class sizes.

I think that cells phones are more distracting than anything, and giving students a change to get off technology and interact face to face can be much more beneficial than using cell phones as a tool in the classroom. 
-Bailey Evans]]> 2017-05-18 03:46:11 UTC https://padlet.com/kelli_wilson1/9mtrtq6xhzm8/wish/172481303 1990skp https://padlet.com/kelli_wilson1/9mtrtq6xhzm8/wish/172487477 i think this goes along with using social media in the classroom. sometimes it could be really useful to enhance learning. but i do see how it can be a huge distraction to the teacher but also the learner. for me, as a student, i use my cell phone to take pictures of what's written on the board. i find it easier to glean all i can from class without having to worry about writing everything before it gets erased. as a high school teacher i wonder if it would be wise to let them take charge of their learning. let them, as preparation for college and adult life, decide to be accountable to themselves...
