How It Works

The idea behind the caveman diet is that the participant would only eat items that a caveman could eat, and nothing more. This means that meat, eggs, fish, vegetables, and limited amount of nuts and fruits are eaten. Grains, dairy, processed foods, potatoes, salts, refined oils, or sugars are not included in the caveman diet. The diet will also require drinking large volumes of water daily. The idea is to snack on healthy foods like nuts and vegetables throughout the day, and then finally eat one large portion at dinnertime. This large dinner would mainly consist of the meats in this diet. As well as drinking your water throughout the day, you would drink a lot of water in the morning, right after you wake up.

The promoters of the Paleolithic or caveman diet claim that this diet will help participants lose weight, gain energy, avoid toxins and sharpen your mind. The diet is supposed to be very “Do-It-Yourself” and will not require as much will power to succeed compared to other diets. Supposedly, the caveman diet has many health benefits, like lowering the risk of diabetes, heart problems and cancer. The main goal of this diet is to train your body to crave foods that are more beneficial for your body than today’s processed foods.

Before beginning the caveman diet, be aware of some concerns. More time is needed in the kitchen, as you will need to make everything from scratch. This diet will also not be beneficial for vegetarians or vegans, as it relies significantly on meats, like the cavemen used to. The diet can also be quiet costly; meats and fish are expensive products. The Paleolithic diet is hard to stick to for long-term because of its many restrictions. This diet will also require you to fill its nutrient gaps with supplements and vitamins too. The irregular eating habits in this diet might cause binge eating or food obsessions as well.

How Does It Compare To What I Have Learned?

Though eating meats, fish, nuts, eggs, vegetables, and fruits is a very healthy habit, you need to make sure you have a balanced diet that includes all of the food groups. According to Canada’s Food Guide, you should also have grains and milk in your diet no matter who you are, but the caveman diet excludes these categories. I would not recommend this diet to teenagers because at their age, their bodies are still growing and need all of the proper food and nutrition to develop the best they can. This would require more than just the fruits and vegetables section and the meat and alternatives section of Canada’s Food Guide. The caveman diet would be suited better for adults who are only on this diet temporarily. No matter what your age is you should always eat the right amount of servings for all the food groups in Canada’s Food Guide. Since the caveman diet does not accurately follow Canada’s Food Guide, those who plan their meals according to this diet might not be able to get enough nutrients and have a higher chance of risking obesity, cancer, osteoporosis and chronic diseases. For this reason, people who track the caveman diet long-term might not actually be benefitting their body, whereas those who follow Canada’s food guide will be more likely to remain healthy.
