Netiquette is the set of rules of etiquette for using the internet!

Students need Netiquette to learn how to use the internet respectfully, safely, and responsibly to further their education.

Teachers need to exhibit Netiquette to serve as an example to their students, modeling the appropriate online behaviors that students should be exhibiting.

Netiquette is also something that is important to follow outside of school in our personal lives, so that we can utilize the internet to the best of its capability while being polite and considerate human beings.

What does this mean?
Exhibiting kind, professional, and friendly behavior on the internet when communicating with others. This also includes avoiding plagiarism, as discussed in a previous rule.

Why  is this important?
It teaches children empathy, which is difficult to maintain on the internet where you don't have to interact with someone face-to-face. It also helps children understand how they should treat people and the kind of treatment they should expect back.

How can this be taught?
By emphasizing the importance of kindness, politeness, and good ethics in the classroom, that way when you ask them to replicate the same behaviors online, the students are familiar with how they are expected to act.

What does this mean?
This refers to using age-appropriate websites when browsing or looking for interesting things on the web, as well as finding credible websites to gather information from.

Why is this important?
When completing an assignment, it's important to know that the website you're using can be trusted. Also, when browsing, it's important that the websites you're on are age-appropriate so that you can understand them.

How can this be taught?

By implementing a lesson into the classroom which shows students databases through which they can find credible web sources. This can be done by having a librarian come into the classroom and show the students how to conduct proper research. Also, placing website restrictions on computers and introducing helpful and appropriate websites can ensure that students will be visiting age-appropriate websites.

What does this mean?

Why is this important?
Plagiarism is a serious issue that can result in serious consequences such as the loss of your job, suspension from school, etc. 

How can this be taught?
By teaching students how to correctly find credible sources and how to cite these sources properly.

What does this mean?
This refers to identifying yourself on internet. For example, when you begin messages, include a salutation and end the message with your name. A signature can also be used with a footer or a header at the end of a message, containing your name and/or identifying information.

Why is this important?
It will help identify who is sending the message and better ensure that it is not spam and is an authorized message. A salutation also helps to make the reader feel welcome.

How can this be taught?
By teaching students to use proper message and letter etiquette. There could be workshops within the classroom showing students how to properly address the person they're sending a message to.
