Idea 61, Assignment 2
I chose the song 'Voorbij' by Marco Borsato. In this song he talks about a divorce in an old relationship he had. Marco still thinks about her and she actually misses her very much and so he hopes that the woman will come back after all. In Michael Drayton's poem it is also about a divorce, where he never wants to see his (old) lover again. But afterwards he still tries to save the love between him and the woman.
Quote 1
Song: 'I would be free

But I'm not'

Poem: 'That thus so cleanly I myself can free'

This seems a bit contradictory, but in the poem he later finds himself not so free anymore and he still wants a relationship with her again.

Quote 2
Song: 'I always take you'
Poem: 'That we retain one jot former love'

The poem actually also tells, just like the song, that he would not forget her and that she would always take him in his thoughts.

Quote 3
Song: 'But not over yet'
Poem: 'From death to life might'st him yet recover'

Because you can still repair it, the relationship is not over yet. They could have another relationship and then he will be recovered.

The Charge of the Light Brigade, Assignment 2
Ik vind dat het een erg goed gedicht is, maar ook spannend. Ik vind het zelf spannend, omdat het gaat over een gevecht in een oorlog. Waarbij de twee partijen tegenover elkaar staan in een valei: 'Half a league, half a league, half a league onward, all in the valley of Death', dit laat zien dat er twee mensen tegen elkaar gevechten. In de tekst vertellen ze bijvoorbeeld: 'Cannon to right of them, cannon to left of them, cannon in front of them, Volleyed and thundered;

Stormed at with shot and shell' en hierbij zie je dat je door de spanning die er in het verhaal is je gewoon wilt gaan doorlezen en zeker omdat het een lang gedicht is, is dat ook best belangrijk. Bij dit citaat: '“Forward, the Light Brigade!

Charge for the guns!” he said. Into the valley of Death

'All the world wondered. While horse and hero fell. They that had fought so well, came through the jaws of Death, back from the mouth of hell, all that was left of them'. Het moraal van het gedicht is dat de oorlog erg is en dat dat gestopt moet worden, want er gaan veel mensen bij dood. In het gedicht staan ook nog meerdere vormen van beeldspraak een paar daarvan zijn: 'Into the jaws of Death, into the mouth of hell' en 'When can their glory fade'.
I think it is a very good poem, but also exciting. I find it exciting myself, because it is about a fight in a war. Where the two sides face each other in a valley: 'Half a league, half a league, half a league onward, all in the valley of Death', this shows that two people are fighting against each other. For example, in the text they say: 'Cannon to right of them, cannon to left of them, cannon in front of them, Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell' here you can see that because of the tension in the story you just want to continue reading and especially because it is a long poem, that is also quite important. With this quote: 'Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!” he said. Into the Valley of Death Rode the six hundred', here it felt a bit like you're really just almost in the story and that makes it even more special and exciting. That's why I think it's a really good poem myself. You are actually looking through someone's eyes while reading the whole fight, that also makes it fun to read. I think it is also good for the people, that this poem was made. This way they also know how things are going there and they also read how the people who fight there experience it. 'All the world wonders. Plunged in the battery-smoke, right through the line they broke; Cossack and Russian, reeled from the saber stroke, shattered and sundered.', this also shows people very well how things are going in the war that is going on there. You also see that the people were very brave in the war and people died because of it. Sometimes they had a lot of courage and were simply killed, you can also read that here: 'While horse and hero fell. They that had fought so well, came through the jaws of Death, back from the mouth of hell, all that was left of them'. The moral of the poem is that the war is bad and that it must be stopped, because many people die. The poem also contains several forms of imagery, a few of which are: 'Into the jaws of Death, into the mouth of hell' and 'When can their glory fade'. This also makes it nice to read the poem. So I think it's a very beautiful poem myself, but also an exciting poem that tells the situation well. It also shows the unpleasant things about the war and that is sometimes quite sad.
