Write about your impressions from today’s sessions on listening and instructions. Was there anything new/surprising/interesting?As I reflect back over today’s session, I can say that it was full of interesting and interactive activities.I think I am lucky to take advice and support on the way of teaching listening skills.I also had the chance to share a lot with colleagues.This was also interesting for me.2. Do you prefer using coursebook listening tasks, materials from other sources, and/or authentic materials? Discuss the reasons for your preference.Coursebooks can be useful sources since they provide us with a certain curriculum, activities for practicing four language skills. Especially if I don’t have enough time to prepare for the lessons beforehand, coursebooks can be life saving. However , they don’t always include interesting theme or content relevant to students’ levels.Therefore I also need to use materials from other sources, authentic ones. I just prepare activities,questions based on authentic resources according to my students’ levels. Thus students can have the chance to see the language with different accents like in the real world. Even sometimes I ask students to find an interesting text, video or any kind of material related to our content.They just share it in the class. When we use some kind of real world texts, based my observations I can state that students become more interested and motivated during lessons.3. Share an activity/technique/material from today that you would like to use with your students and/or in a PDC. Why did you select that one?I especially liked the activity ‘ICQs’.In my classes I am going to be more attentive about instructions. I study with crowded classes so it can sometimes be a difficulty for me to give the message to students.From now on, I am going to use instruction checking questions activity in my classes. I also liked the ‘KISSS’ (KEEP,IT,SIMPLE,SHORT,STAGED). The challenges I encounter most in teaching speaking are students' lack of vocabulary, fear of making mistakes, pronunciation problems.This makes students demotivated and they attempt to use their mother tongues. For some students as well, I can say that they experience a loss of self-confidence.2.Which ideas/activities/techniques from today would you like to try when you return to your school?Today I also learned a lot of activities so motivating and interesting.I am thinking of especially using ‘Paper slides’ in my own classes.It is so useful as it involves the usage of many skills.Students are expected to listen,read and write besides speaking.There are also visual clues to help them learn.3. What sort of extra resources do/will you use with your students to develop and maximise speaking in class?I usually divide the class into pairs and have them practice conversations. Groups can work together to prepare assignments or to develop dialogues or make videos all while speaking English to each other. While they are studying, I walk around the classroom observing them. Sometimes I give the students a certain topic or theme and we study on sample dialogues and vocabulary related to these topic.Then it is students’ turn to create their own dialogues and act them out for the class.When we are studying on coursebook, I ask students read the instructions aloud. Have you changed any of your opinions since the line up discussiom?I mostly work with crowded classes. For some sample activities, I sometimes need to think how I can adapt it to be applicable in my classes. Line up discussion activity fits perfectly even with large groups.It was so enjoyable as each time your partner changes and you discuss a different topic. You must also do discussion in a limited time which encourages you to focus on the task and speak spontaneously. This is also a good point. Even shy students can get motivated to speak. I develop this point of view that reading can also be taught in an enjoyable and interactive way.2.Which activities/techniques would you like to try with your students, and/or share with teachers in a PDC meeting?As I reflect back over today I can state that it was full of enjoyable activities, suggestions for useful materials and techniques. I intend to try Line up Discussion,KWL chart, jigsaw reading with my students. If we consider PDC meetings, I would like to focus especially on subskills of reading. This topic was quite interesting for me, too. I realized that I already confuse some of them. Thanks to what I have learned today, I just refreshed knowledge about these subskills. So I think it is so important for all language teachers firstly to be aware of what these subskills express and include in detail.Keeping this knowledge in mind, the teachers will be able to engage more relevant content also appropriate for students’ level in reading classes.3.Ask a question you still have about teaching reading.Actually I wonder if there are any other subskills of reading. I already know that our focus was on teaching reading but also I would like to learn especially how we can measure these subskills effectively in a realiable and valid way. If we had another day, I would like to learn more about teaching grammar communicatively. 2.What was your favourite vocabulary teaching suggestion/technique/activity from today? Why?The technique ‘Elicit- Check- Drill- Write’ for presenting vocabulary was my favourite. Teacher doesnt just give the vocabulary with meaning written.Students are involved more in the process of learning. Students are expected to guess the word and its meaning thanks to visual or the story the teacher created for them. Then teacher checks meaning of the word by asking some CCQs to students.This was also a new and interesting point for me.CCQs helps teacher whether the meaning is clear or not.Then teacher continues with correct pronunciation of the word and write. Thus teacher gives students the opportunity to learn vocabulary in a more interactive way.3.What would you share from today with teachers from your school/in a PDC?Actually all activities and techniques I learned today are valuable. On a PDC meeting, I would like to focus on CCQs and practice them. As a warm up activity, ‘Tarzan conversations’ will also be our topic to be covered. How do you feel about formative assessment now, compared to the beginning of the day?Actually I knew what formative assessment means and the logic behind it before the lesson. Monitoring students’ progress during classes and regarding teaching and learning process as ongoing and continuous are a part of formative assessment. What I needed is to learn about more practical aspect of formative assessment. Through this lesson, I learned various kind of activities and tools aiming formative assessment. So I can say that I feel more confident about formative assessment. 2. How do you plan to benefit from the networks you have built throughout this training in the future?In my opinion, building networks is also a part of professional development and it is a must in today’s world. Taken into account our case, we all have the same goals and objectives. We are going to make use of what we all learned throughout this training on our own PDC meetings.
