I often use games to teach vocabulary, both in class and also during online learning. I try to integrate one game for every group of words I teach. Sometimes I do games with the entire class, on the board, and sometimes I do games I create myself in small groups. I believe that games help students learn and they keep them interested. I teach elementary students, and most of them love the games. I try to vary the games so they don't get bored with them. I think kids are more likely to remember the new words if they use them, and games are a wonderful way to do this. I also create online games for them to play as preparation for tests.

Like any activity in a classroom, if there’s no purpose, if it doesn’t assist with the learning process, then it’s not going to have any benefit. But if it’s used with purpose, is strategic, connects with the learning, etc, then they are a vital part of the lesson. I often use games successfully in my lessons. One of my favorite classroom games is “I have, who has”, because it is very inclusive and gives a great opportunity to review target vocabulary and does not scare anyone off. I also give them card games to practice vocabulary, or I have used on multiple occasions jeopardy themed classroom games. Although there is a down side of jeopardy with very competitive pupils: the noise. It can be very loud. I also have used Quizlet Live, which I adore and I am sure that it also really helps to improve teamwork and the atmosphere in the classroom. Nowadays, I use it as well for vocabulary review in the beginning of my lessons on ZOOM. Games are excellent tools to repeat and review lexical items in varied ways.

Once a week ot two, I bring games that we have and we prepared in our English team and the students are playing in groups or pairs according to the subjects we learned ( opposites, verbs, grammar etc..). It is amazing to see how the students learn and rememeber by using games and how the atmosphere changes when they are active or when they play and teach others. It allows all the students to participant (espacialy the weak ones) and varied the English lessons.

Usually I use a lot of games in order to tech vocabulary in the lower grades (4th-5th), because it makes the pupils more active in the lesson, they enjoy it and the learning process becomes more meaningful and therefore they remember it. When the pupils hear the words “let’s play a game” they already feel better and think that it’s not about the learning but about making fun, so they are more likely to participate in the lesson and even the ones who usually don’t listen and take part, are more active when it comes to game. They have good experience about learning English and that’s why they have more motivation to learn. In the higher grades I rarely use games to teach vocabulary since I don’t have a lot of time and there are much more words to learn. Moreover, I didn’t find (yet) games for teaching vocabulary that are not childish and are suitable for the higher grades (6th-8th). I use games to teach grammar, but not for vocabulary.

I think it’s very important to add games and activities in the lessons, it gets the students to take part in the lesson, to understand and remember the material and vocabulary better because it has more effect on them rather than a regular frontal lesson. Of course it is very hard and time consuming to come up with the right and effective activity , that’s why I try and prepare games that I can re-use with a little change of vocabulary or level.

Of course, I use games to teach vocabulary. I'm sure they develop certain skills while playing. They learn to work in teams, they listen and talk, and feel motivated and challenged. Also, the environment in cy class is positive and effective.

My students are mostly weak and need to fill the gap because they have so many words to learn (gap from elementary school even). In class we use the board to match words, to find missing words, to mime words, to write or erase them. We also use pieces of papers to match words, to find same words, to play memory games and so on. Now, these days, when the learning is distant, using interactive games has become a part of my lessons. We talk with flipping online cards (or random wheel of cards) about topics as ice breakers or pre reading activities, (instead of using a simple word list), they play online games using different tools to practice new words. I think they enjoy and cooperate not knowing that they practice words more than usual. The variety of free tools to create games is huge, and it just takes a few min. to create or share a ready made game.

I believe that teaching vocabulary through games is the best way for pupils to learn and use new vocabulary. Learning English as a second language and in our case as a third language is not easy for the pupils. That is why we, as teachers need to look for the best and most efficient way to teach new vocabulary. I enjoy using games for both: in teaching and reviewing vocabulary in my classes.
I tend to use Bingo game, hidden words in a box: a pupil chooses a card from the box. It is either in Arabic or English and they translate or act for others in class as a game where they have to guess the word and meaning. There are lots of games that I use like : the wheel of names, etc. In short, games are helpful for use in the class for different purposes.

I use different types of vocabulary games, since I believe they encourage students to use an active language and make them more interested and involved during the lesson. I think using classroom vocabulary games can help pupils process the new words' memory and allow everyone the opportunity to participate. Using games is really fun, but also important and useful for creating communication among students and for developing their social skills.
