Think about the END, not the lesson. Look at state standards for the end goal. Break up standards for the semester into 9 or 10 lesson plans, one for each week. Pick an asessment for each topic to make sure each student has fully comprehened the topic. Then, plan your lesson.

UbD and backward design were created based on 'teaching for understanding'. Some key terms in UbD are understanding, performance assessments, design, and meaningful curriculum and instruction. The aim is to up the students' achievement levels.

Metacognition: thinking about thinking. Comprehension is when someone understands what they're reading. Comprehension monitoring is needed; you can do this by administering quizzes or asking students questions. This way, the student also knows where they are in the curriculum. A related saying is "read, stop, restate, find difficulty, repair." The goal is for the student to find out what they don't understand on their own.

I would apply the backward design method. I think that this is an incredibly detailed way to plan lessons, and it truly does set the majority of students up for success. Our job as educators isn't to just make sure our students pass the classes; it's to make sure they're taking the knowledge with them. I would use a lot of class discussions and make sure that my future students know that it's okay to be wrong, but it's not okay to stay wrong. Then, eventually, by the end of their time with me, I would hope that they could point that out themselves.
