Registering for the RNC-MNN and other info

- You have to be a current RN. Have worked at least 24 months in the specialty you are testing during your career. Also have to have been employed in this specialty sometime in the last 24 months.

- The cost of the test is $325 dollars. Composed of a $50 non-refundable application fee and $275 testing fee. The testing fee is what can be reimbursed to us through the hospital if you successfully pass the exam.

- The test is completed on a computer. Paper and pencil tests are no longer available.

- Once you register for the RNC-MNN (maternal newborn nurse) exam, you will receive an eligibility letter within 4 weeks. You have 90 days after receiving you letter to register for the exam. You are responsible to scheduling your own test.

- Tests are administered Monday-Saturdays 9-1:30. There are different testing locations (most are in H&R block offices in Lexington and Louisville).

-After completing the examination, the candidate will receive a preliminary score report.

-Official results will be mailed from NCC within 21 days of exam administration (date of certification is based on the date on the official results NOT the exam date).

- You have 3 hours to complete the exam

• Prior to attempting the examination, you will be given the opportunity to practice taking a test on computer.

- The Maternal Newborn Nursing examination consists of up to 175 test questions. 150 are counted for scoring and the remainder are embedded in the exam as pretest items. The pretest items do not count toward the examinee’s final results.

- There is one question format used for all NCC examinations.

- Each question has a premise (stem) and three alternative answers.

- The answer options are alphabetized by the first word in each answer option to randomize the answers.

- Computer tests are delivered in a different random order for each candidate.

- Questions will test both basic knowledge and application of knowledge.

- Questions that contain laboratory data will show results in conventional units of measure with international units in parentheses.

- Drugs are listed in both generic and trade names where appropriate.

- There is no set percentage passing level. An ability level for each candidate is calculated based on the number of questions they answer correctly (there is no penalty for wrong answers). Just like the NCLEX

- NCC certification must be maintained on an ongoing basis every three years.

- Certification that is not maintained will expire

-The NCC certification maintenance program allows you to continue yourcertification status by obtaining specific hours of continuing education credit as defined in your Education Plan, generated by your Specialty Assessment. That means you don't have to retake the exam. You can also be reimbursed from work for the cost of your CEU's. You recertify by completing CEU’s in areas of weakness determined by your exam.

- If you do not pass the exam, you do not get a refund. There is no limit to the times you can retake the exam, but you must wait 90 days to retest each time, and pay the full amount each time.

When you are ready to apply to take the test, go to this website:http://www.nccwebsite.org/Certification/Exam-detail.aspx?eid=6

You can do this anytime. It can take up to 4 weeks to get permission to schedule your test. Once you get permission, you have 90 days to schedule your exam. So if we are planning to do this around March, we need to apply soon. But you are free to apply whenever you like. If you want to complete the study group and test at a later time, feel free. Some of us were planning for March (for use in our clinical ladder packets).

I hope this answers a lot of the main questions you have. Feel free to check out the website if you need more information. I will make another post about how the test is comprised/ what material to expect.

Here is the PDF of the study material. There are 50 practice questions with answers at the end. I paid $60.00 for this, so if you want to contribute $5.00 to me, that would be nice, but it is not required. Everyone in this group is free to use this file. It contains detailed information about each topic that could be on the test. Most of it will seem like a review due to the kind of patients we take care of. I am currently searching for more practice questions.

Hey ladies! By now you should be well acquainted with your study guide, and hopefully have had time to peruse through chapter 1. If you're ready, I have made up some questions to test your knowledge over said chapter. I will post the answers after so that you can check yourself.

Everyone, We used unit money to buy a series of 5 tests, 100 questions each to prepare us for this certification. Hyewon will be sending the tests out to all of you. If the wrong answer is given the scoring function will give rationale for the correct answer - but if you get the right answer it gives very little information. The tests can each be taken a total of 3 times online. I have already taken the first test one time - so two more people can take it online. We have paper copies though, and we can print out the answer guides as well. The tests are supposed to be formatted in the same manner as the "real" certification test.
