This beginning purpose is correct, we need to first find and separate the issue; however, the steps which we have taken now have been greatly corrupted into something worse.
As prison stands now, we punish. We punish not only the worst of the worst, but also the vulnerable innocent. While reform programs do exist, the primary function has been focused upon punishment. Whether an inability to pay bail or to murder, jail is where the victims will be. 
Within these jails we may isolate the prisoners completely from the already isolated societies of the prison. Once free of the bonds, they are hindered forever as they are tagged with a "CRIMINAL" status. This can lead to positive feedback loop in which they are sent back into prison for more punishment. 
Prison may and should still complete it's purpose of punishment, especially for those who deserve the punishment. However, prison should be a stop in life for rehabilitation. I believe the purpose of prison should be to rehabilitate the criminals and get them back into shape for social reintegration instead of just punishing them and treating them like animals. Depending on the crime of course.

Prison should be used to contain dangerous criminals such as murderers, rapists, etc.
