In Home Was a Horse Stall by Faith Ringgold, the young African American girl and her family face systemic racial discrimination, symbolized by their forced living conditions in a horse stall due to their race. This mirrors the systemic inequalities highlighted in The Shadow of Hate and a real-world example in 2024, when the City of New York settled a racial discrimination lawsuit involving FDNY fire protection inspectors. These inspectors, mostly non-white, were paid up to 20% less than their white counterparts performing similar duties.

Both Ringgold's story and the FDNY case demonstrate how racial discrimination permeates various aspects of life—housing, employment, and social structures—creating barriers and perpetuating inequality. These examples show how systemic racism affects marginalized groups, denying them fair treatment, respect, and opportunities.

U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is a federal agency designed to enforce laws prohibiting workplace discrimination. They help mitigate discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, and genetic information. The commission's goal is to ensure all employees experience equal opportunities. They uphold these laws by performing investigations on discrimination claims. Connecting this source to our short stories is quite easy. In "Home was a horse stall," there was a huge lack of protection for marginalized groups. If, for instance, the EEOC was founded during this time, some of the hate the Japanese Americans revied would have been stoped. The connection between EEOC and the short story highlights the importance of ensuring equal treatment and opportunities for all people.

Trainings on Diversity and Equality are provided to staff in Salt Lake schools and University of Utah

A fairly new initiative provided and implemented by Salt Lake schools (including the U) provided diversity and equality training to staff. These trainings aim to create inclusive environments that address discrimination and promote equity. In "Home was a Horse Stall," the protagonist experiences intense racial discrimination. Her experiences highlighted the lack and need for education on and around racial issues. Similarly, "The Shadow of Hate" delves into the long history of prejudice in America. This emphasizes the social consequences the training pushes against. Overall, the new required staff training will help resolve and hopefully end the racial issues we still see today.
