As a high school senior graduating in a few weeks, you could imagine that college is on my mind a lot. When I am driving to school, I am thinking about college. When I am sitting in my room, I am thinking about college. When I am talking with my friends, I am thinking about college. When I am spaced out in class, yep, I am probably thinking about college. I have been accepted to and committed to Indiana University and will be starting my next 4 years there this fall. As I was thinking about who to interview for this project and what to do it on, I realized that my mom would be the perfect person since she actually went to school at IU too. As I thought more about it, I realized I had several options. My entire mom’s side of the family went to Indiana, and my cousin is a freshman there currently. So why did I end up choosing my mom?

I knew I wanted to make my interview about something that was meaningful to me and something that would even be useful for me in the future. I figured that college is such an important milestone in life that is coming up quickly for me, so why not talk to someone about it? Hearing what my mom had to say seemed the most important to me. Not only is it convenient that I could talk to her easily at home, I would also be able to hear it from another woman who didn’t go there that long ago. I was thinking about interviewing my cousin since he is there now, but he also hasn’t experienced his full 4 years there yet, and I am sure a guy’s experience would be much different than a girl’s, especially with rushing.

I mainly wanted to hear about my mom’s most memorable moments at IU and also see if she had any advice for me since I will be starting all over again as a freshman. In the interview, I was able to talk with her about several things including rushing, choosing and changing majors, getting settled and getting used to being away from home, her favorite activities and places on campus, etc. Hearing about her great experience there makes me excited to begin my next chapter of life at IU and I can’t wait to be a Hoosier!

After talking with my mom about her experience at IU, I am more excited to start my next chapter of life there. I feel more prepared to be on my own now that I have heard about what it is like to adjust to that. This conversation has made me want to get involved in activities on campus once I get there and has confirmed my interest in rushing a sorority. Although I am hopeful for my future, this conversation also made me think about the possibility of losing contact with my high school friends. After my mom mentioned that she didn’t really stay in touch with her friends, I wonder if I will stay in touch with mine. Right now, I can’t even imagine not talking to my closest friends from high school anymore, but maybe that is a normal part of going off to different schools. We are all going on our own journey’s and high school will just be a cluster of memories that we will look back on one day and smile about.
