In Animal Farm by George Orwell, mistreated animals decided to rebel against their farmer and run the farm on their own, and created rules to live under that were called the Seven Commandments. The pigs, being the smartest, end up as the ones in charge, especially two named Napoleon and Snowball. The two never agreed on anything. This led Napoleon, after raising nine puppies into ferocious dogs that did as he said, to chase Snowball off. From there, things gradually got worse and worse for the other animals and better for the pigs, who now ruled with fear, and told the animals that everything that went wrong was because of Snowball. Boxer, a horse, worked the hardest out of all of the animals and was one of Napoleon's biggest supporters. As things got worse and the pigs went against each of the commandments for their own gain, Boxer outlived his usefulness, and was sold for money. By the end of the book, the pigs were no longer distinguishable from the farmer the animals had originally rebelled against; they had become just as bad.

In the late 1950s, a man named Jim Jones founded a 'church' called the "Peoples Temple Full Gospel Church"; although he called it a church, it was really much more like a cult. He moved himself and his followers multiple times, and ended up moving them to a settlement in the South American nation of Guyana. US Congressman Leo Ryans went to Jonestown to investigate reports of human rights abuse in November 1978. The day after, when he was departing with several Temple members who wanted to leave, they were attacked by Temple members twice, the second time resulting in the deaths of Ryans as well as several others. Shortly after, Jones called a meeting and told his followers to drink a beverage laced with poison and sedatives (which they'd practiced with non-poisoned drinks before). They did; there were 900 deaths, with about 300 being under the age of 17.

Blindly trusting someone and following them without questioning will always end badly. In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, animals overthrow their cruel farmer and begin to run things themselves. The pigs take over for the most part at first, and then eventually completely control the farm. Although there was evidence of corruption, many of the animals, like Boxer the horse, blindly followed and trusted the pigs. For Boxer, this resulted in him being sold to be killed as soon as he outlived his usefulness. This concept is also shown when you look at the events of the Jonestown Massacre. People blindly followed Jones, trusting what he said without questioning it. This first led to them being moved to the town of Jonestown, which they'd been promised would be a paradise, and turned out to be an awful, overcrowded community where they were treated horribly and not allowed to leave. Their blind trust eventually led to them drinking poison-laced drinks, and the deaths of all 900 people who had lived at Jonestown and followed Jones. Both Boxer and the Temple members blindly followed someone without questioning their motives; in Boxer's case, this was Napoleon, and in the Temple members' case, this was Jim Jones; and their blind trust resulted in their being taken advantage of, and eventually their deaths.
