Pupil Voice in the Nursery

The Nursery have incorporated responsive planning into their practice in order to further enhance pupil voice and choice. This is often linked with the corresponding Article both verbally for the children's development and visually for parental engagement.

The Nursery have also been looking at the different areas of SHANARRI.

Each of the SHANARRI indicators have a colour corresponding bear which the children take turns taking home. This strengthens the home/school link while also helping to inform both pupils and parents regarding the SHANARRI indicators. Each family is encouraged to record their experiences using a variety of photographs, pictures and text. This is then collated in the nursery's Health and Wellbeing Adventures book.
In addition to this the SHANARRI bears are used to highlight which indicators are being taught or facilitated through play and the environment.

Nursery Rights Respecting Charter

The nursery children in Kirkmichael have been learning about their rights. Pupil comments regarding some of the key rights have been added to the nursery charter which is displayed in the cloakroom area for parents to view and scan the QR codes for more information regarding children's rights.

Through out the school the pupils divide themselves into their four house groups These groups rotate around the school participating in various different activities each with a Rights Respecting focus linked in with the Gold Action Plan.

Launch of Right's Respecting Ronny across the school.

In the week commencing the 16th of January the Rights respecting committee began working together to launch the school's Rights Respecting character, Ronny. They did this by identifying various different ways in which children's rights are currently met throughout the school. Then evidencing these in the form of speech bubbles for Ronny to say, which are now displayed across the school environment. They then worked hard to share their learning and Ronny with the rest of the school community in assembly.

Duty Bearer Badges

One Right's Respecting Activity was introducing the children to the concept of Duty Bearers. This was done through an initial activity where the children worked in groups to identify and categorise the rights that they consider to be the most important. Then through group discussion and teacher exposition the children were helped to understand that all rights are important and that it is the responsibility of adults or Duty Bearers to ensure that children are able to have their rights met. The children then went on to identify various different adults within the school community that are Duty Bearers. They then made Duty Bearer badges for them to wear throughout the school.

Pupil Voice

The children are encouraged to share their pupil voice both within the class context as well as across the whole school in a variety of different ways.

The class have renamed a teddy bear SHANARRI after the wellbeing indicators. Each week there is a teaching input based on one of the indicators. The bear then goes home with pupils on a rotational basis to learn more about the Well Being indicator and shared with parents and carers. This is then recorded in the bear's diary and shared with the rest of the class the following week.

Infant Class Charter 2023

The infant class have updated their class charter having selected three Articles that they wish to focus on as a class.

Diversity and Inclusion Audit

As a RRS committee the children collected examples of toys, games, jigsaws and books that could be seen to evidence diversity and inclusion throughout the school. Afterwards they perused the school catalogues with the aim of purchasing some additional resources which would be a better reflection of diversity.

Some of the pupil's in the upper class have been set mini writing challenges, one of which was to consider what they would use three wishes for. Above is an example of how the Rights Respecting work across the school is being evidence across other curricular areas.

RRS Silver Accreditation feedback was summarised for staff to ensure everyone was aware of RRS strengths and next steps in order to write the action plan for Gold accreditation.

UNCRC Activities

One of the action points highlighted on our Gold RRS action plan was to extend the children's understanding of the role of the UNCRC. During Rights Respecting week one of the activities was to learn about the UNCRC and then to produce posters, which are now displayed throughout the school.

Shield of Rights Activity

One of the group activities was looking at informing the pupils about their rights in general to keep the RRS learning current and ensure that pupils progressing throughout the school were kept up dated regarding their rights. This consisted of both a PowerPoint, group discussion and an activity based on their Shield of Rights.

Pupil Voice

The pupils have regular pupil voice meetings during both assembly, fortnightly and also designated pupil voice meetings each term. The pupils also have a Pupil Voice board to record their requests. These then are responded to on the main Pupil Voice board, which displays a record of the impact that the Pupil Voice makes within school.

Head Teacher Awards

Pupils are selected for a Head Teacher award each week. There is one pupil selected from each class for an award each week based on one of the areas of SHANARRI. These are being taught within class and the Head Teacher awards are displayed in the main building cloakroom area.

Diversity Novel

Some of the ASN pupils have been reading a novel which deals with some significant racial issues. This has been used to explore diversity and respect for one another within the group tasks set.

All the pupils worked together in their House Groups to produce a whole school Playground Charter. Initially groups were asked to draw and write their ideas for a whole school picture. Next everyone voted for the picture of their choice. Playground rules where discussed. These where also voted on and then typed up in child friendly language during Rights Respecting Committee time. The final product is very large and displayed in our outdoor classroom area. Smaller versions of the Charter and laminated and displayed in visual areas around the playground for reference.

As part of one of our Rights Respecting Week's throughout the year the upper class worked in groups with some of the younger pupils to write invitations for our Rights Respecting Steering Group. These were sent out to both parents, local councillors and people within the local community inviting them to support us in our journey and to learn about children's rights with us.

In advance of the Rights Respecting School Focus week the children were asked to contribute ideas for a whole school competition to raise funds. Funds are being raised to purchase a copy of "The Little Book of Rights" for each pupil. The children came up with some fantastic ideas then voted for their favourite.

Kirkmichael's First Steering Group meeting

As part of our Rights Respecting School's Focus week in September we had our very first Steering Group Meeting. We had a number of guests join us from councillor, Caroline Shiers to parents and members of our local community. Initially we shared our RRS Gold journey so far and then went into small groups to brainstorm ideas for not only a new name of the group but also fundraising ideas as part of our Gold action plan aims.

RRS Competition Entries

Each class took part in a whole school fundraising activity during one of our RRS focus weeks. Pupils paid £2 each to enter their class competitions. P1/2/3 took part in a draw Rights Respecting Ronny and his favourite right. P4/5 took part in writing an acrostic poem with the letters of Ronny's name. P6/7 wrote a story about Rights Respecting Ronny. The money raised contributed towards class prizes and the purchase of The Little Book of Rights for each pupil.

Updating the school Website and Policies

During our RRS focus week in September 2023 pupils were involved in updating the school website to include clear and relevant links to children's rights. During this week staff also spent collegiate time reviewing and updating school policies.

Additional Diversity Resources for the infants

When Lidl launched their new range of diversity dolls the school's PTA kindly funded a selection for use within the infant building.

Pupil Voice Talk About Book

At the end of each day the infant class take out their Talk About Book to reflect on the days activities. Four or Five pupils roll the die each and then answer the reflective questions. This is then scribed in the class Talk About Book.

World Children's Day Celebrations

As part of our Rights Respecting Schools Journey we celebrated World Children's Day on the 20th of November. The children took part in a range of activities from interactive assemblies online, a whole school scavenger hunt as well as a whole school art project.

Save The Children Fundraising Event

As a whole school we discussed the need to help support children both locally and globally who do not always have their rights met due to additional circumstances, ranging from poverty to climate changes. As a result of this the school arranged a Christmas Jumper Day to raise funds for the charity Save The Children. We raised a total sum of £74 and had a fantastic festive day in the process.

New Nursery Rights Respecting Parent Information Board

Nursery Floor Book

The nursery have begun sharing their Rights Respecting journey with parents using their new floor book, which is left out on display in the cloak room area for easy access during parental collection times.

School Improvement Plan

As a school we worked together to produce a child version of the whole school Improvement Plan. The children where asked what it meant to them and what they had done so far to work towards each of the three areas. The plan is displayed using artwork which depicts the local area and Kirkmichael Bridge.

Pupil's Leading Their Learning

The pupils in the infant class lead their own contextualised learning. This is done with the introduction to the new topic and a brainstorming session to find out what they already know, what they would like to know and what they would like to make or do. This is then used as a basis for the planned learning.

Playground Equipment Selection

Pupils requested some new playground equipment at one of the Pupil Voice Meetings. The older pupils were then in charge of perusing the school catalogues while being given a budget to find various options. This was then presented to the whole school and voted on. The new equipment was purchased and is currently being used as a result.

Third Steering Group Meeting 20/03/24

During this meeting we established where the new bird boxes would be displayed throughout the local community. We also continued to produce out Global Goals Passport, poster and prepared our whole school assembly for presentation.

Global Goals Passport Committee Group

HIGIOUS Group Work

During one of the Committee Groups children worked together and created posters for each area of HGIOS4 (Pupil Version) and explored how each of these areas linked to the UNCRC and our rights. Pupils worked in multi-stage groups to share ideas, discuss key points and create their posters over a number of sessions.

Global Charity Work

During committee meetings pupils have worked together to research different global charities and voted on Smalls For All as their charity to support. We discussed a variety of options for fund raisers and settled on a bake sale. The committee have worked hard to make posters to advertise the sale.

As evidenced on the pupil evaluations the vast majority of pupils feel respected, listened to in school. They enjoy school and know who to go to if they need help. The majority of pupils feel safe at school

RRS Pupil Survey Results

As can be seen in the results of the RRS pupil survey the vast majority of pupils would say that they learn about their rights in school, they know that an adult will help then to feel safe and like the way that they are.
