         <description><![CDATA[<p>Rabies is considered an Old World bats, bats have been found to be the reservoir host. The Dog-maintained rabies lyssavirus are known as RABLV and these specific strains are both maintained in dogs and transmitted by them by horizontal direct transmission through a bite or open wound. Recorded history shows signs that rabies was first observed in 2000BC in Babylon where records show people should use preventative measures against dog bites with dogs showing symptoms. In the Western Hemisphere, rabies was first recorded between dogs and humans in Mexico City in 1709. Rabies is a zoonotic disease that is transferred from animals to humans, it is also a viral disease because it is a virus organism. According to the World Health Organization, dogs are responsible for about 99% of human rabies cases.</p>]]></description>

The timeline can be broken down into the following key periods:</p><p><br/></p><p>Ancient History: References to rabies date back to 2300 B.C. in Mesopotamia.</p><p>19th Century: The development of the rabies vaccine by Louis Pasteur in 1885 significantly reduced the spread of the disease.</p><p>20th Century: Widespread vaccination of domestic animals, especially dogs, began, significantly reducing cases in developed countries.</p><p>21st Century: Rabies is still prevalent in many developing countries due to lack of vaccination and medical infrastructure.</p><p><br/></p><p>Number of People Affected</p><p>Global Estimates: Annually, rabies affects about 59,000 people worldwide.</p><p>Deaths: The vast majority of these cases result in death once clinical symptoms appear, as rabies is almost always fatal without timely and proper post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Virulence Definition:</strong> Virulence is how much harm a disease can cause to its host. It measures how severe the disease symptoms are, how well the pathogen can invade the host's tissues, and how strong it is against the host's immune system.</p><p>How Virulent is Rabies?</p><p>Rabies is extremely dangerous:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Fatality Rate:</strong> Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. The death rate is nearly 100%, making it one of the deadliest diseases.</p></li><li><p><strong>Symptoms:</strong> The virus attacks the brain and nervous system, causing severe symptoms like confusion, agitation, fear of water, paralysis, and eventually coma and death.</p></li><li><p><strong>Transmission:</strong> Rabies spreads through the saliva of infected animals, usually by bites. The virus travels from the bite site to the brain through the nerves.</p></li></ul><p>Changes in Virulence Over Time</p><p>The danger of the rabies virus has stayed the same over time, but several factors have lessened its impact:</p><ol><li><p><strong>Vaccination:</strong> Vaccines for both humans and animals (especially dogs) have greatly reduced the number of rabies cases in many parts of the world. This hasn't changed the virus's danger but has reduced the number of people who get and die from rabies.</p></li><li><p><strong>Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP):</strong> PEP involves immediate cleaning of the bite wound and giving rabies immunoglobulin and a series of rabies vaccines. This has been key in preventing the disease in people who have been exposed to the virus.</p></li><li><p><strong>Control Measures:</strong> Better control measures, including vaccination campaigns, public education, and controlling stray animals, have helped reduce the spread of the virus, especially in developed countries.</p><p>In summary, the virulence of rabies has stayed mostly the same but the precautions taken against the disease have changed and bettered the spread.</p></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>What was the most revealing aspect you learned about your disease?</p><p>Answer: The most revealing aspect that I learned about the disease I chose was the level of trauma and fatality caused by a virus. It was amazing and scary to learn about the possibility of almost anyone on every continent except Antarctica becoming a victim of this parasitic virus. Almost any mammal can become infected and spread this virus to other animals or humans since this is a zoonotic disease. In continents like Asia and Africa it is most common for children to fall victim to this virus which is hard to imagine considering the painful and psychological process the virus takes on the nervous system of its host, then eventually ending in fatal results.</p><p>What did you learn about your disease of study that surprised you?</p><p>The facts of this disease that surprised me include the variety of hosts for the virus including pets and the nearly 100% fatality rate of infected organisms once symptoms appear. There is an incubation period that is usually several days or weeks and this allows opportunity for intervention. Fortunately, another surprising fact is that rabies can be prevented entirely through prompt post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) if administered soon after exposure.</p><p>What did you come across in your research that should have been a part of the Padlet assignment?</p><p>The critical breakthrough of Louis Pasteur's rabies vaccine was a climatic point for modern vaccines. This allowed for the first steps to control rabies and begin the counter-revolution against rabies and similar parasitic or contagious diseases. This also led to some countries successfully eradicating rabies.</p>]]></description>
