In the laboratory in cooperation with our science teacher, our students carried out a project-based science activity focused on nature-based water filtration systems. Before starting the experiment, they watched an informative video about water pollution and natural filtration processes to gain background knowledge and better understand the topic.

After the video, our collaborating Science teacher encouraged students’ curiosity by asking thought-provoking questions such as: “Where does clean water come from?”, “How does nature clean dirty water?” and “Can we imitate nature to purify water?” Students actively shared their ideas and discussed how soil layers and natural materials can help filter water.

Next, the materials used in the experiment were introduced, and the students built a layered water filtration system together. In the first setup, they observed how dirty water was filtered through different natural materials. In the second setup, students repeated the same experiment by adding more soil to the system. They noticed that the water was filtered more effectively and became cleaner, helping them understand how the amount of filtering material can affect the purification process.

At the end of the activity, students designed and created their own prototype water filtration systems. Throughout the process, they improved their observation, collaboration, problem-solving, and scientific thinking skills while also developing awareness about the importance of protecting clean water resources and sustainable environmental practices.

Our young scientists have been up to in our latest project, "Blue Lab: Nature to the Rescue!" Together, we explored one of nature's greatest superpowers: its ability to clean and purify water all on its own. To see this magic in action, They became eco-engineers and built our very own natural water filtration systems using everyday materials!

Just like the Earth has different layers of soil and rocks that trap dirt, we carefully stacked our own layers inside an upside-down plastic bottle.

We took dark, muddy water and poured it directly into the top of our filters. As we watched the water slowly trickle down through each layer, something amazing happened. The dirt stayed trapped in the layers, and crystal-clear water started dripping into our collection cups below!

Through this hands-on experience, our students didn't just learn about science; they developed a deep respect for how nature protects our planet's resources. We are incredibly proud of their curiosity and teamwork. We also have special thanks to our Scince teacher to help our students to understand this filter better.

They carefully built a filtration ecosystem.

The Big Reveal: From Muddy to Clear!

The real excitement began when we poured muddy, dirty water into our handmade filters. The kids watched with wide eyes as the water slowly traveled down, leaving the dirt behind in each layer. When clean, clear water started dripping out of the bottom, the classroom was filled with smiles and cheers!

Through this playful, hands-on activity, our students discovered how precious our water resources are and how beautifully nature takes care of us.

Portuguese students participated in the Blue Lab activity, where they carried out a water quality analysis of the Lena River in Porto de Mós, together with their Natural Sciences and Physics and Chemistry teachers. Through this hands-on experience, students developed scientific skills and gained a better understanding of aquatic ecosystems. This topic is especially important because monitoring water quality helps protect biodiversity, preserve natural resources, and promote environmental sustainability for future generations.
