The idea of fast food started in Ancient Rome with a ready-cooked meal restaurant. Throughout the middle ages street vendors began gaining popularity. In 1902, Joseph Horn and John Hardart brung fast food to America through automat restaurants. White Castle opened in 1921 and became the first chain restaurant in the U.S. Although the first fast-food restaurant was opened in 1948 by the McDonald brothers, the term fast food originated in the 1950s. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, fast food’s popularity grew because of the new highway systems that were scattered throughout the cities. The up-and-coming restaurants moved into more urban areas in the late 1960s. As fast food develops and improves, better health options are introduced. In 2002, Burger King added the first veggie burger to their menu as well as introduced “stealth health” to the fast food scene. Fast food has developed and changed over time as it grew from a ready-cooked restaurant to a multi-billion dollar industry.

An intake of calories like this has led to 30% of children being obese in Los Angeles as well as 37% of adults. The trans saturated fats inside the food can lead to a higher risk of dementia, an over amount of LDL in the bloodstream, and a decrease in memory and learning abilities. Even though it seems that eating fast food is a choice, many people that live in food deserts have to eat fast food in order to survive. The fast food industry isn’t just bad for the consumers though, it negatively impacts its workers as well. Due to poor working conditions and a non-livable wage of $9 an hour, ⅔ of fast food workers in Los Angeles said that they experienced injuries or safety hazards while on the job. Since 90% of employees don’t get benefits at McDonald's, only 2% of McDonald's revenue goes towards benefits. The fast food industry has a large effect on the workers and the consumers that it provides for.

As a result of their styrofoam packaging, it will take 900 years for it to break down. Packaging has also contributed to 19% of all energy used in the US every year and 49% of all US litter. Inside the packaging, there are PFAs. In order to make PFAs, they input chemicals into the water that then damage ecosystems. As a result of the industry's production, pathogens, hormones, drugs and fertilizers are seeping into the water. Damaging the ecosystems isn’t the only environmental problem the fast food industry has caused. Due to factory farming and inhumane practices, animals are deprived of basic instincts. Besides their cruel actions, the industry produces 37% of all greenhouse gasses yearly Along with the fast food industry, the harsh conditions of the livestock industry cause the industry to be projected to produce 70% of total greenhouse gasses by 2050. Although every industry impacts the environment, the fast-food industry has a larger impact than any other industry.

Although the industry supplies 3.5 million people with a job, the workforce is cheap, easily replaceable, and easily controlled because of the small amount of human skill needed to complete the job. The fast food industry also contributes to a large portion of the advertising industry. Because their advertisements attempt to appeal to as many people as possible, the fast food industry spends over 4.6 billion on advertising yearly. These advertisements have also influenced other companies to sell fast and cheaply made products. The ads target young, impressionable children because they can influence their parents to constantly purchase the food. The fast-food industry has transformed the way products are made and sold as well as created multinational companies that have affected the economy in numerous ways.

McDonalds has started an attempt to reduce fossil fuels used in happy meals by 90%. Many fast-food companies have proposed replacing ingredients in their food with healthier ones as well as displaying clean and fresh ingredients to make the food more enticing. Another easy solution is called “stealth health”. The suggested idea would subtly make the food healthier without alerting the customers. McDonald’s and Burger King are also set on Although companies can largely contribute to solving the fast food industries issues, an individual can do just as much by themself. One solution is to avoid fast-food restaurants in general as well as avoid situations where fast food is the only option. Another solution is to plan your meals in advance in order to avoid the impulse of buying fast food. Large companies and individuals alike can work together towards fixing the issues within the fast food industry.
