Furthermore, attempts at altering the essential qualities of something will fail because those qualities are essential to that being, like a goat's smell. In this proverb, goats symbolize humans that have been oppressed for features they cannot change, like gender or race, and the smell of the goat is the feature itself. The washing represents the attempt at changing that being. In order to adhere to the teachings of this proverb, we need to be accepting of others rather than "washing" them or trying to rid them of qualities that make them who they are. Throughout history there are many examples of people trying to change others or get rid of the qualities that are inherent to them, such as the Pogroms in Russia or the Holocaust. These tragic genocides were mislead efforts at obliterating the Jewish race, but they both failed because "no matter how many times you wash a goat, it will still smell like a goat"; operating out of fear rather than acceptance will not work.
