The reason why it was unique is because they offered to buy the land of the native Americans instead of taking it. Another reason is that they were  trade partners and friends with one group of Native Americans but bitter rivals with the other group. Another thing that New Netherlands did with the Native Americans was commerce. Commerce is the business of buying and selling goods.
