Here, we get to know Tony through the disorder that has been with him his entire life, fetal alcohol syndrome. “The Drome,” as Tony calls it, reveals information about his past and how people see him.

Tony has lived with this condition since birth and was the cause of his mother’s drinking problems while he was in the womb. That said, the Drome reflects his family issues and is put on display for the world to see. Since he could remember, people would only see him as his condition, leading Tony to develop a vital emotional intelligence and skill for reading people.

The Drome plays a significant role in Tony’s background; it allows us to know more about his past, perceptions, and persona.

Another way we get to uncover more about Tony Loneman is through how he describes himself. In this quote, we learn that Tony sees himself as a dancer, differently than the rest of the world sees him. When he looks in the mirror, he doesn’t see the Drome, which tells us that there is something hidden behind Tony’s appearance; there is something more to him than what we see on the outside.

We are able to learn about Tony’s personal identity through the way he sees himself.

We learn about Tony through his relationship with his grandmother, Maxine. We hear how Maxine was there for Tony when nobody else was, making her the only person Tony has been able to rely on. Maxine knows Tony inside and out— better than he knows himself. From this, we understand that Tony lacks a connection and understanding of himself, and that he relies on Maxine to help guide him through his emotions.

We learn about Tony through the motives of his actions.
Tony walks off the train, silencing the woman asking meaningless questions. He saw right through the woman’s questions, as they were just used as a means to provoke him. By walking away from the woman, he ends the conversation and prioritizes himself, not giving any attention to those that will interfere with his personal identity. From this situation, we learn that Tony is evolving to become more independent and confident within himself.

We learn about Tony from the discoveries he makes about himself. After he was shot (and perhaps dead), Tony has this “out of body experience” where he is able to see himself in the third person. It is only then where he realizes that he was never himself, and that the person he sees isn’t who he is. We learn that the Tony Loneman leading up until this moment was not the “real” Tony Loneman, and he now has finally found his true identity.

We get to know Tony Loneman through his self-discoveries.
