I think this has irony in what the future is has in hold in for the Jews on the bus. The conditions on this bus was miserable and weary. When they got pass the Hungarian border polish offices pulled them off and made them dig their own graves. Then proceeded to shoot them. If he had givin the cap he would've gotten things from the SS officers and would have been able to stay with his son. Elie kept trying to fall asleep but his father was not letting him but when he released what falling asleep meant, he did not let it happen.
