Because, if we only listen to the voices that get heard easily, we might make changes that really aren’t for the benefit for the whole education system that don’t do the fundamental thing education is supposed; which is to do give all children a fairly equitable chance for success. “

Personal Connections:

This quote connects to me personally because I see this
difference everywhere. Throughout my life, I have known some parents who knew
their rights and were often at the school, refusing to take no for an answer.
While other parents would say “well it’s unfair but there not much I can do,
just wait it out, you’ll graduate soon”. So many families may have opinions,
but are unable to get the time off from one of their 2-3 jobs to do more than a
quick phone call to the school to complain, or simply have no clue that they
have the right to have their voice heard.

Shared solutions:

One way we can help improve equity for the education system
is to make parents more aware of the option of having a parent advocate. With a
quick google search I found there are many resources to help parents self
advocate or seek help finding a parent advocate here http://www.parentsadvocacy.com/parentsadvocacy/home.
A parent advocate is a way someone who
is there to help parents who are unfamiliar with the school board process or
have a child with more complex needs. They help to improve the communication
between the parents and educators and limit possible conflicts. Having a parent
advocate can significantly help those who don’t speak the language, feel
intimidated by the education system itself, or are unable to communicate their concerns
effectively.

Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession:

It is our job as teachers to uphold the ethical standards
for the teaching profession, such as care, respect, trust, and integrity. In
doing so it is necessary that we ensure that all of our students are cared for
and are having the best learning experience they can have. This means ensuring
a consistent open connection to the parents and considering every parents
concern equally. No one know a child better than their parent and no one cares
more for their child than a parent, which is why it is so important to really
ensure parents know they can come to you with their concerns and you give them
the tools to self-advocate or find a parent advocate.
