Formative Assessment and Elementary School Student Academic Achievement: A Review of the Evidence (Klute, Apthorp, Harlacher, Reale, & Marzano, 2017)

This review finds that implementing formative assessment in upper elementary schools tends to boost student academic achievement (especially in math more than reading or writing). Key findings include that “other-directed” formative assessments (i.e. led by teachers or computer programs) are more effective overall, though student-directed assessments also help, particularly in math. The study suggests that using formative assessment frequently, providing feedback, and involving students actively lead to better outcomes.

Exit tickets are a quick, formative assessment strategy used at the end of a lesson to check for understanding. Students complete a short task—such as solving a problem, answering a question, or reflecting on what they learned—before leaving class. Teachers can use this feedback to identify misconceptions, adjust instruction, and plan future lessons. Exit tickets provide immediate insight into student learning while encouraging students to reflect on their own progress.
