Understand Who You Are?

1. How would you describe yourself in the 3rd person?
If I was to describe myself in the third person and use the multiple personality tests, I would describe myself as a friendly, open, emotionally driven and hard working person. However I understand that no one is all perfect and I can be overly emotional and arrogant in a working and social environment. Based on the test, I always try to get the job done and I answer these questions accordingly and I never try to let my emotions get the better of me. I think I can be personable and honest about my opinions and I can also be agreeable with better ideas than my own.

2. Would you be happy to introduce yourself (in 3rd person) to someone else?

Introducing myself to anyone is perfectly fine, I like meeting new people however I get shy and realise that I have introverted traits, so I wouldn’t be the same 3rd Person description that I described earlier. However, once I get to know people, maybe for a week or two, I'm very open and friendly and I wanna do the best for them.

Emotional Intelligence

1. How do I react to certain situations

In certain situations, my reactions can be vastly contrasting whether the situation has affected me. In stressful situations, I can often become irrational and my emotions can get the better of me and this often affects the task in hand. I like to give myself five to ten minutes to recover and slow myself down, when my head is rushing. However, once I get over these periods and I can talk to someone about it, I feel relaxed and I can go back to focusing.

2. How can I adapt to my surroundings

When adapting to surroundings, I gain comfort in asking lots of questions and getting to know the people around you which is really important when adapting. Sometimes, I like to learn in advance about the new environment in order to feel confident before I even enter the building.

3. How can I recognise my emotions

I am very self aware when it comes to my own emotions and I can recognise my emotions by taking time to think about what is making me unhappy and what I can do proactively about my emotions and solve this. This could be addressing the problem directly or talking to someone about it.

4. How can I recognise someone else's emotions

When it comes to recognising someone else's emotions, I always look for negative body language or negative changes in the person's character. I always try to help as much as I can but I understand that people need space or they need to talk to someone about it and that solves half the problem.

5. How do I create an environment of positivity in a workplace

In creating a positive environment, it's important that the balance has been made and the task is not put off track. I often make the occasional joke and take part in fun activities with the team that take 5-10 mins, something we can engage with during the break. I’ve done this at a previous job and it keeps everyone positive.

Values and Culture

Look at your values and identify how much you place importance on each of them from 1-10 (10 being very important to you). If you have put 10 on a value that would be one of your core values.

1. Reliability
2. Commitment
3. Dependability
4. Optimism
5. Efficiency
6. Positivity
7. Honesty
8. Loyalty
9. Passion
10. Integrity

1. How do you show this value in your work (school or past experience)

In a group project with reliability, I like to be on time with my part in order for the group to succeed. I never want to be the one member to let the team down. I commit to everything I do, no matter how important it is.

2. What company also places importance on those values you have marked as 10

My last job, the White Swann on Fetter Lane, London, felt that reliability was really important. I was there, on time every day, trying my best to be there for the team as a whole.

3. How do they show this?

The White Swann was really clear that my presence was necessary and that my runner role was critical to the team working well and running smoothly.

4. Are their values aligned at all levels

Whether its causal dining like the White Swann or fine dining, Its really important that you are reliable and can be trusted with your responsibility at the restaurant.

Leadership Style

Democratic Leadership
1. Why is that your leadership style?
This is because I like to hear peoples opinions, and the general consensus of the group is really important to me because this could be the same consensus of the public and thats important.

2. What examples can you give to back this up?
I've only been a leader a few times in projects and other things. I always as questions, and never let my voice be the final word. I would separate tasks and would ask for feedback from the other members.

3. What type of leadership style do you strive to be and why?
I would like to have the knowledge to be more authoritative and persuade more people to get on board with my ideas, this position i would strive.

Personality and Skills
Charisma
1. What makes me say this is a personality trait of mine?
I like to talk to people and I like charm people for my position or my way of mind

2. What examples can I give to prove my personality is like this?
I've talked to multiple people that I've never met previously at parties or special occasions, and they have said I have charisma.

3. In what situation does this attribute come out?
At social events, whether at a party or in a public place.

4. What happens when you are not Charismatic?
I can often be shy and introverted and I don't talk as much as usual. But after a few minutes, their mind can turn.

Competitive

1. What makes you say that this is a good skill you have
Whether its a simple game or tough challenge, I can always produce my best in order to win.

2. What examples can you share to prove that you are good at this.
When I play card games with my family or a football game, I always want the win. You have to be number one in situations. And if you lose, I am respectable and courteous.

3. What have you done to improve your skill.
I look for challenges like joining a new club or a sports teams in order to gain that feeling of winning

4. Am I constantly challenging myself to be better at this skill.
Always challenging myself and finding new ways to get better and improve.

To me, the role of a mentor is an advisor who can understand the responsibility they have been granted with and give teaching to your practice. They use your strengths that you have and adapt them to the intended position, and uncover your weaknesses to be improved on. Sometimes people cant see their weaknesses until someone tell them and acknowledges them to that person.
As a mentee, you could gain more experience than from a mentor than experience itself. From my last part time job, the chef at the restaurant became my mentor, he gave me good advice, he taught me lessons that I would have never expected to need and he exposed my weaknesses and gave me solutions to solve them. I would gain multiple benefits if I was a mentee because I was a mentee.
In terms of the next five to ten years, they are unpredictable in my mind, as i write this. i would hope that after I pass Les Roches, I would gain a assistant manager role, have a steady income and to be placed in a location back home in England. And then eventually, develop my management skills and become a manager in the next 2 years, and hopefully in 7-8 years time, I really want to be running my own restaurant with a great team of people and create a service that people really enjoy.

During my part time job, I experienced a democratic management style. My manager was extremely open and honest with each and everyone of us. He would often offer us a discussion so that we could add our opinions into account. The positives of the democratic leadership style is that me and my team were happy that we were being acknowledged and that our opinions could lead to a idea formed from us. The negative side in my opinion is that you lose the assertive, authoritative edge and that your original idea may be over developed to a point where you are not doing it the correct way as intended.

The simple story is that something had been said out of context about someone and then they got in a heated argument even when none of them knew what had been truly said in the first place. Each of them were sent to the management office to talk out and communicate effectively and out of the ear of customers downstairs. They talked it out and there were a couple of sour days between them then it was resolved.

What motivates you personally?
In short terms, what motivates me is the relaxation after a hard days work, when I am on a break i can often be bored and lethargic. I understood the feeling that motivates through my last part time job. After working from 11 and getting back home at 12 each night, me sitting down knowing that I have worked hard and now I can have time for myself away and let my mind wonder, was a really great feeling. I felt I had earned this time, after each day. Being in a lazy state and underworked is my worst feeling and I always want to be active in what ever job I do. I always wanted to be pushed and progress to different tasks, knowledge is a key motivator for me. Finally people have always been a motivation for me, I always try and make them proud.

I have seen many examples of ways that they have motivated staff. For hotels bars and restaurants, there might be specific items they needed to sell so the managers would make competitions to decide who could sell the most gin and tonics or specific beers would win a prize at the end of the week. Often at my last part time job, we would do group games in order to get to know each other and just to make everyone happier and actively involved. There is also employee of the month systems which is decided by management and could lead to small bonuses

In my opinion, luxury comprises of many things; comfort, expense, and elegance spring to my mind first. Luxury is the state of mind or impression that is given when something offers or is marketed in a certain way. There has definitely changes to luxury as a concept over the last decade, how the underlying valves of luxury don't change in my opinion. With new technologies and new experiences on offer in today's world, items that have started as luxury have gradually become necessary and there are only a couple of exclusive luxury experiences that are unchanged in today's world.

With unconscious bias, it all depends on the experiences we have developed, sometimes you can create a personality for people before meeting them. I haven't really thought about having a unconscious bias until these questions. I have always fit in with people extremely similar to me, based of past school education and I would be drawn to that crowd of people more than others.

In my experience of my future internship, I found it through a family friend. They required me to send a copy of my CV and a British passport for the working requirements. I received an interview the following week as they were quick to respond. I was very lucky to received a response so quickly however I understand that I cant always rely on my family friends however they were eager to contact me and the process was smooth and seamless. I would highly recommend the Fat Duck and their HR Department.

My take on this presentation is that I would want many factors when I would want to choose who to work for, in my next job. With CSR in mind, there are many things to expect from modern companies in hospitality. Firstly, the fact that companies do have a responsibility to make a profit in order to survive however, its a priority for people to be paid correctly and fairly for the job they are preforming. No one should fell underpaid or undervalue due to the finances of the business. Secondly, the environmental factors should be considered and should be a factor that has emerged over time, growing in importance. Hotel should take environmental issues into their own hands.

The most important part of a hotels brand its reputation with is dependent on customer opinion and employee opinion. This is a combined effort from the brand to succeed in each area of the CSR criteria and be corporately responsible, i.e not prioritising profit over people and being sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Very good e-portfolio. I can see you spent time and effort in reviewing the different activities and developing your answers. The examples chosen for the forums are very good as well as the first part about self-reflection. Review your career goals to focus more on the career side. You have done all the required activities. Well done.
