In my classroom, we make sure to make it a welcoming and warm environment for everyone. We have many incoming students that are refugees as of late. Many only speak Spanish. I make sure to make my classroom a dual language center so everyone can feel a part of our learning. Everyone learns it in English and Spanish

An extensive repertoire is a must in an elementary classroom. Children LOVE to sing and dance and request their "favorites." Keep them singing and dancing and you will have happy students and great management.

The way I have my curriculum set up is that in 6th/7th grade (sometimes I get them twice throughout these 2 years, sometimes I get them once or none) we do percussion ensemble and I focus heavily on written notation reading with activities of aural skills embedded. My school has a vibrant multi-cultural student body and we have a big 'all school' celebration during Hispanic Heritage month each fall. We meet in the auditorium and students dress in costumes from their various backgrounds, heritage and countries. We share and celebrate the music, dance and traditions of various Hispanic identities. This is something new that I have implemented this year in my band class that works wonders! I realized that everyone loves food and I started using words from Mcdonalds (fries big mac chicken nugget etc.) to teach rhythmic notation. To further differentiate and reach my spanish speaking population I found spanish food words to use for rhythmic notation on instagram (pan, queso pastelito etc.) and now my students can read music faster and more collectively at a higher rate than ever before! The students loved these modifications and it has helped in my classroom tremendously and all students feel included

I have a hard time incorporating this because there's not a huge culture of music appreciation and desire at my school. It feels more sports, cheer, and dance heavy. Also, many of my HS students have never taken music or had a very inconsistent music education. So lower skill set, combined with the culture of music in school, causes this lack of confidence/fear of judgement. And thus these barriers make experiencing musical expression much harder for them.

It's so important to me to build community. I have worked on creating a welcoming, cozy, environment in the classroom where we are all working together, practicing kindness and showing each other love and support. One of my focuses is to help students be teammates, give each other positive feedback, help each other, be kind to one another and create together. Build community.
