Lifestyle Risk Factors for High Blood Pressure

As a physician-scientist, Tulane University associate professor Dr. Lydia Bazzano has contributed articles on hypertension prevention to numerous peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Lydia Bazzano shared her thoughts on lifestyle modifications in hypertension control in a 2000 issue of Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, develops from a combination of causal factors, some of which are outside of the patient's control. A family history of high blood pressure, for example, can significantly increase a patient's risk. Even among those with naturally higher risk, however, certain lifestyle changes can reduce the likelihood of developing a dangerous hypertensive condition.

Excess weight for example, directly correlates with high blood pressure. It puts greater strain on the heart and causes increased pressure in the blood vessels. Weight loss, then, can immediately reduce a person's risk of high blood pressure.

Exercise is also effective at reducing blood pressure risk. Decreasing one's sodium intake is a well known recommendation with extensive evidence behind it. Excessive alcohol use can increase blood pressure while and tobacco use, raises the likelihood taht blood will clot and put the body at risk of other serious conditions, including stroke and heart failure.

Finally, an individual can mitigate his or her risk of hypertension by managing stress. Chronic stress can not only increase pressure in the blood vessels directly, but can prompt such hypertension-inducing behaviors as poor eating and drinking to excess.
