         <description><![CDATA[<div>Problem Statement: There is an increasing need to have proper food waste management due to increasing food wastage.<br><br>Current measures: <br>1) SG Food Rescue organises Veggie Rescue Missions at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre. They  approach shopkeepers and ask them to give us the vegetables and fruits that they no longer want. These are first distributed among the volunteers for their own consumption. The majority of the collection gets channelled to soup kitchens and charitable organisations that feed the needy.<br><br>2) SG Food Rescue also organises Fridge Restock missions which involves collecting unsellable vegetables and restocking community fridges at Yishun, Tampines, Queenstown, Farrer Park and Teck Whye.<br> </div>]]></description>

Cries for help are ignored and there are few outlets of help that youths can reach out to.<br><br><strong>Current Measures:</strong><br>(i)  The Department of Health in Hong Kong promotes the importance of maintaining good mental and psychological health to students, parents and teachers through education and publicity activities.<br><br>(ii) The Social Welfare Department in Hong Kong have  set up the "Hotline Service for Youth at Risk" which provides counselling and referral services to children and young people facing crisis through telephone contact.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Problem Statement</strong>: <br><strong><em>Stigmatisation</em></strong> of mental health issues, that results in a severe lack of manpower in the field of mental healthcare</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Current Measures</strong>:<br>(1) There are <strong>numerous government organisations</strong> and <strong>initiatives</strong>, such as the Silver Ribbon Project, that address mental health issues by portraying mentally ill individuals in a more positive light. They help to combat mental health stigma and encourage early treatment for affected individuals. They also facilitate integration of individuals with mental illness within the society, promoting mental health literacy. <br><br>(2) There are <strong>campaigns</strong> to fight social stigma surrounding mental health issues. For example, there used to be specially themed trains, encouraging families, friends, neighbours and members of the community to support people with mental health conditions. This helps to raise awareness and educate the members of the public more about mental health issues. </div>]]></description>

Other programs: Free food for all empowerment, together with Mendaki Sense, they aim to provide their beneficiaries a path towards self recovery, including an opportunity to upgrade their skills. This will provide them a better platform to move up the job market. These schemes include resume building, food and transport support, and while they are on course, job matching and many others. <br><br>2. Kids luv it program: Healthy breakfasts are distributed to children between the ages of 6- 12 from low income families. This helps parents offset the costs of breakfast so that kids are able to attend school without feeling hungry.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Problem Statement:<br></strong>Stigma attached to mental health institutes restricts the amount of aid they receive, resulting in a lack of volunteers willing to help mental health patients.<br><br><strong>Current Measures:<br></strong>1) Multiple youth-initiated projects such as Project Weave, Club Heal and Beyond the Label SG seek to increase exposure for mental health patients to make their plight known to the public, raising funds for future ad-hoc events to help the patients, in addition to increasing exposure to expand the pool of volunteers willing to help mental health patients. In addition, such groups are also funded by official organisations such as the National Youth Council; granting them access to resources to expand their reach.<br><br>2) More resources will be invested in helping mental health patients, such as building  mental health clinics in half of Singapore's polytechnics by 2021 as part of the government's five year Community Mental Health Masterplan, which includes expanding the IMH's reach to 11000 from it's current capacity of 8000 patients.</div>]]></description>

For example, there is a support group to motivate smokers to remain smoke free for 28 days.<br>(2)  Moving Upstream To Prevent Initiation In Youths<br>Statistics have shown that 75 per cent of Singaporean smokers establish their regular smoking habit before they turn 21 years old. Hence, HPB is leveraging school-based mental wellbeing programmes to promote<br>resilience and positive self-esteem to help youths to develop the self-awareness and ability to say no to social influences that may encourage tobacco use.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Problem Statement</strong>: Small percentage of smokers quit smoking from previous anti-smoking campaigns<br><br></div><div><strong>Current measures:</strong><br><strong>1</strong>. A new social media campaign to educate youth on the harmful effects of tobacco use and healthier alternatives to smoking, such as exercising and picking up a new hobby, launched by the Health Promotion Board in the second half of 2018. This will provide knowledge, tips and support services to help smokers quit smoking.<br><br></div><div><strong>2</strong>. The Health Promotion Board launched a video series titled ‘I Should Have Said’ in 2018 which will be posted on the I Quit Facebook page, featuring former smokers sharing about the negative impacts of smoking on their health, family and finances. The videos showed how family members who smoked will distance themselves from their families and end up regretting it.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>Problem statement</em></strong><em> </em><br>The amount of smokers in Singapore hasnt reduced much after the initial decline over the past decades. The smoking trend has also been introduced to teenagers, with a subtancial rise in underage smokers.<br><br><strong><em>Current Measures <br></em></strong>1) Enlarging of graphic health warnings on the cons of smoking and a standardised packing for all ciagerrates brand by the Ministry of Health. This is done to reduce the attractiveness of these smoking products, no matter the brand, and to remove promotion of tobacco products overall. Additionally, it serves to educate the general population, smokers involved, on the risks of smoking.<br><br>2) I Quit 28 days Campaign and Countdown programme. This programme seeks to encourage smokers to quit, and to support them through the process of quitting. The events held during the campaign or programme help establish a community based approach that supports smoker to quit smoking. Benefits of quitting are particularly highlighted, such as improved fitness and improved bonds. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Problem Statement:</strong></div><div>There is a lack of awareness surrounding plastic waste in Singapore with 1.76 billion plastic bags, bottles and disposables used yearly throughout the country.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Current Measures:</strong></div><ol><li>A straw free movement has sparked multiple well known fast food restaurants as well as hawker centres to stop providing plastic straws, with posters in the place of empty straw holders that encourage customers to join and learn more about the straw free movement to reduce plastic waste in Singapore. </li><li>A 120m caterpillar art installation made of discarded plastic bottles was unveiled at Marina Barrage to raise awareness about plastic pollution and was on display for a month. During that time, more plastic bottles were added to its body by volunteers from schools, businesses and government agencies in support of the movement to raise awareness about plastic waste in Singapore and to encourage more people to reduce and recycle plastics. </li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Problem Statement:<br></strong>Many inmates in prisons do not have a clear vision for their future and do not have ample job opportunities once they are released.<br><br><strong>Current Measures:<br>1) </strong>Samsui Kitchen was set up in the Changi Prison Complex to provide opportunities for inmates to learn how to cook and prepare meals. The kitchen churns out 2,400 meals an hour and these meals were sent to nursing homes. Thus, the inmates were able to pick up soft skills, gain experience and contribute back to the society at the same time.<br><br><strong>2) </strong>Several F&amp;B companies provide a second chance for ex-convicts to come. Restaurants like Swensen's provide opportunities for ex-offenders to work for them in a pleasant environment, helping them reintegrate back into the society. Though there were stigmas, the ex-convicts were doing as well as the others and had improvements in their attitudes. They were eventually given leadership roles within the company.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Problem Statement: </strong>Many students, especially in Primary and Secondary School, struggle to understand concepts taught in school as lessons are boring and dry.  <br><br><strong>Current measures: <br>1. </strong>Many free online softwares available such as Google Classroom, Moodle, Kahoot allow teachers to post and share resources with students online, as well as quiz students on their knowledge in a fun and interactive way, engaging their students better and helping them understand concepts more clearly.<br><br><strong>2. </strong>SSI’s Education Innovation includes the use of new smart digital technologies. SSI trainer Eunice Lin, who conducted the course The Starting Point: An On-boarding Programme For Social Workers, felt that using technological tools helped elicit more participation from students. For instance, an interactive projector that uses digital ink captures writing in real-time and projects it on to a screen for viewing. Ms Lin found that this tool facilitates multisensory learning and offers convenience, as it is easier to make changes to the content and save it electronically, compared to using traditional flip charts.<br><br></div>]]></description>

The HA (Hospital Authority) provides appropriate specialist services for adolescents with suicidal risks. Patients with suicidal risks would be triaged into priority 1 (urgent) cases in general to ensure patients with urgent medical needs are given timely treatment.</div>]]></description>

Their student care centre also offers before and after school care for primary school children, allowing active engagement so that the children feel accepted in society.</li><li>Beyond Awesome after school programme: children are cheered on by adults and their peers and empowered to be themselves and be proud of who they are.</li></ol><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>JunXue</strong></div><div>Problem statement: Detection of depression amongst students were insufficient and there was no support given to them.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Current measures</strong>:</div><div>1. Dr Jamie Chiu, a physchologist in Hong Kong created a survey and a game to try gather data about their mental health such that they can be given the right support as soon as possible.</div><div>2. The Educatiom Bureau came up with new measures such as improving student counselling support in schools, holding seminars to help teachers and parents to identify problems earlier to help the child and prevent suicide.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Jia Sheng <br><br><br>Problem Statement: </strong>too much plastic waste due to overconsumption of plastic bags and other plastic goods.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Current Measures:</strong></div><ol><li>NTUC FairPrice on Monday (Jul 23) announced the launch of the “FairPrice Plastic Bag Management Programme”, a framework that looks to holistically reduce plastic bag The programme, which was developed following a review conducted earlier this year, will replace the existing FairPrice Green Rewards Scheme on Aug 1. First introduced in 2007, the scheme offered customers a rebate of S$0.10 for bringing their own bags to shop at FairPrice stores.</li></ol><div><br></div><ol><li>Tesco, the UK’s biggest Tesco’s has become the latest major UK supermarket to ditch the 5p single-use bag in favour of the 10p bag for life. As of Monday 28th August 2017 you wouldn’t be able to buy the single-use bags from Tesco’s stores across the UK. By completely eliminating plastic bags from their stores, Tesco is helping to reduce the total amount of plastic waste.</li></ol><div><br></div><ol><li>The European Parliament voted 571-53 this week to approve a measure to slash single-use plastic across the continent. The bill still needs to pass additional procedural measures before it can go into effect, but observers say its chances look good and could begin enforcement as early as 2021. Citing a need to protect the ocean from a deluge of plastic pollution. The bill calls for a European ban on plastic cutlery and plates, cotton buds, straws, drink-stirrers, and balloon sticks, as well as reductions in other types of single-use plastics like food and beverage containers.</li></ol><div><br></div>]]></description>
