In one episode it showed monkeys history.  Before, monkey was an annoyance to every one around him.  He was a thief, prankster, ect. But the main reason he did the things he did was because he felt like an outcast. He had no friends, no family, and he was the only monkey. He later ran into Master Oogway and tried to fight him. I think the money king is similar to this character that goes by John. He is from this book called unordinary John was a kid that didn't have powers and was different from the rest of society just as the monkey king was considered different  from society because he was different from the rest of the gods demons spirits ect. Then john got powers just like everyone else and when to get revenge for how he was treated this is the same to how the monkey king beat up all the gods in heaven and took revenge for not accepting him.

What happens when some people feel threatened or scared, they will get angry, or try to appear more tough than they actually are. The Monkey King was probably trying to mask his weakness, and hide his insecurity by becoming invulnerable.
