Hermes is the god of speed and the god of many other things. These other things are trade, wealth, luck, fertility, animal husbandry, sleep, language, thieves, and travel. Hermes is the son of Zeus and Maia, he is also the one that sends messages to other Greek Gods. Ever since birth he was a trickster, the reason for this is because the first day of him being he decided to steal cattle from Apollo.

In The Odyssey Hermes was mainly the messenger of the gods and the conductor of the dead to Hades. Hermes is also a god of roads and doorways, and he was the protector of travelers. On several occasions, Hermes provides guidance and protection to Odysseus. He warns Odysseus about Circe's magic, for example, and advises him on how to resist her spells. Hermes also assists Odysseus in dealing with other challenges, such as the Sirens. Zeus sends Hermes to Calypso's island to instruct her to release Odysseus, who has been imprisoned there. Hermes shows Zeus' will to Calypso, encouraging her to release Odysseus.
