He began his studies a little while after Charles Darwin introduced his theory. After working with primrose plants and observing the changes between generations, he concluded that the "mutations" he saw in the plants meant that new species plants were being produced. This led him to disagree with Darwin's theory and Hugo de Vries believed that evolution occurred through "discontinuous variation" (large changes happening over a short period of time). According to his "mutation theory," organisms will have mutations in their genes that will greatly affect the organism and result in a new species altogether.
