When Nick suddenly arrives to Daisy's surprise at her home, it almost seems that she has to affirm her happiness, like she's performing, rather than truly expressing her joy after seeing him.

Daisy describes what she wants for her new born daughter: to be a fool. In this time, society made an unannounced rule that women are not intelligent, or it's definitely not valued by men, unlike beauty.

Don't you think?" After coming back to the table Daisy said, "I looked outdoors for a minute and it's very romantic outdoors...It's romantic, isn't it, Tom?"(17-18)  The telephone rang inside.
