9.5/10

The book is insanely funny with so many mean, self deprecating jokes at even the most darkest parts in the novel, he's always somehow manages to crack a joke or two. Which is this novel's only flaw in reality, this novel is nothing but jokes and oddly humorous descriptions which does take the edge in some of the saddest moments in the novel. However; the best part is that he uses fan-art at the beginning of every chapter that gives you an idea of what that particular chapter (or essay) is like.

This collection of essay's is about either Shane's depressing childhood as he struggled with being morbidly obese in a financially troubled family. Only now he sheds light and makes fun of how absurd the situations were when he grew up with having no friends other than his mom where they would be awake late at night watching terrible soap operas while stuffing their faces with junk food. He even goes into his adult life and talks about how awkward it is being an internet super-star at times. Most of which do involve Denny's to a certain extent since some stories does involve him getting Denny's as it is one of his favorite restaraunts.

This book is a dark story with witty humor, wacky descriptions about growing up in long beach California as a morbidly obese kid. Which I thought was a pretty awesome. I always enjoyed when people made light of super dark situations by talking about how depressing some of the stuff he had to go through was. There was quite a few times where I would read through a paragraph and actually start laughing at some of the jokes. Granted, dark humor is something I personally prefer, so it may not be for everyone as it does get quite dark within it's humor where the author even goes as far as to make jokes about death so if you are sensitive to that type of humor this is definitely not the book for you.

Throughout the novel, Shane had to deal with many conflicts. Whether it would be the bullies that always were in his life that would make fun of him for being fat, or the severe depression that came after. He always had to deal with a severe mental weight due to his insecurity about how he felt about his body image. Of course he managed to over come it by losing all of that weight and becoming internet famous, only for it to lead to more depression and anxiety. However; he always managed to find some sort of happiness, most of the time it was through food.

Throughout 'I Hate my Selfie' there are many lessons to be learned. However; the best is most certainly that no matter how terrible life gets, things will always get better. Shane had to go through many horrible things in his life from bullying to dancing with his drunk teacher during his senior prom. Even then he shows us that in the end, it does get better as he always had his Mom and Grandma to cheer him on by giving him food while watching terrible shows on Tv. He even goes as far as to say that being with his fans and reading their support drags him out of depression spells in his adult life.
