The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to repel ghosts. In the United States and Canada, it is one of the most commercial holidays of the year.


On this night, when it is dark, children dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating around their neighborhood. Adults have Halloween parties. Candy is given out (and eaten). Jack-o’-lanterns are lit. And, most likely, somebody is left a little scared.
