Ms. O'Hara--What classics, apart from Shakespeare have you read? How was the experience? If you have not read a classic (from before 1900), why not? What do you imagine "old" books to be like?

I have never read a classic book on my own. I think the reason behind this is because old books don’t really catch my attention and it is hard to understand the language they use since the way they speak is very different from how people speak today. I like books I can relate to/books I understand the events and language because they are happening in real life. I did not like Shakespeare at all, it was super confusing and just not an enjoyable read. I imagine old books to be confusing and use unfamiliar language.

The topics most of them cover don’t really appeal to me when I read for fun. I think that these books are also similar to our current books in terms of themes and motifs.

What do you imagine “old” books to be like?

“Old” books are like the foundations for the literature we have today, although some may beg to differ. When I was younger I read the Little House on the Prarie Series, and that was probably the first instance when I read an “old” book. I didn’t particularly enjoy it, but I understood the cultural significance. Books were how Mrs. Ingalls Wilder documented her long and exciting life on the prarie, which would otherwise be told through journal entries/diaries. Since then I’ve read the Wizard Of Oz, although it was quite different from the story we all know today, along with some other titles that I’ve started, like Great Expectations or A Christmas Carol, or Little Women.

I find old books less appealing to me just because of the time period and how they wrote. I tend to lean more toward book in the late 1900s and early 2000s. I prefer the style and what the books are actually about.

To me, not being able to understand a lot of the language in a book isn’t appealing. Not being able to understand the book’s plot, and concepts isn’t something I’m necessarily interested in.

I’m also worried slightly that classic books will be harder to understand than newer books.
