This is a way of selecting students for various task; answering questions;or organising students in groups.
Every students name is written on a lollipop stick. When a teacher wants to ask a series of questions to the class, the teacher can pick a name out of the handful of lollipop sticks for a student to answer the question.
The benefit of this is that students are picked at random; once chosen the teacher can place this particular lollipop stick in a separate pile meaning the same students are being picked repeatedly; and all students pay more attention throughout the lesson when they know that anyone can be asked a question

Green cone signifies: understand what they have to do and have no queries or questions. Orange cone: have a good understanding what is going on/enough to keep going/has a question or query but it's not urgent. Red cone: Students can't continue without the teachers help.
Whichever cone signifies how the students are getting on, is placed on top of the three cones.

When asking a question, teachers use method of think pair share. Initially students think of ideas individually. When instructed by teacher, students collaborate with the student beside them. Pairs then share ideas to the rest of the class. Allows for reciprocal learning as stronger students may give others good ideas. Students may be more comfortably sharing ideas with rest of class in pair rather than individually.
